SAN FRANCISCO -- Amazon's new Kindle Fire will have mapping services via a tie-up with Nokia Oyj, according to two people familiar with the situation, filling a gap in the tablet's capabilities while snubbing Google's (GOOG) popular service.
The world's largest Internet retailer, which says its nine-month old Kindle Fire now accounts for one in five U.S. tablet sales, has teamed up with Nokia on mapping, the two people told Reuters.
Amazon will release at least one new version of the Kindle Fire next Thursday.
Amazon will also add location capabilities to the new Kindle Fire, which requires either a GPS chip or a process known as WiFi triangulation, the people said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak ahead of Thursday's launch event.
Mapping services, which are popular features on tablets, typically include street maps, information about local businesses and sometimes traffic status. They can also support navigation instructions and third-party applications that depend on location information, such as travel services.
Location capabilities mark the location of tablet and smart phone users.
Google's Nexus 7 tablet, which competes directly with the Kindle Fire, comes with GPS receiver chips to support location and mapping functions.

first Kindle Fire launched last year and at $199 costs half the price of the entry-level Apple (AAPL) iPad, helping it rapidly gain consumer acceptance. On Thursday, Amazon said its Kindle Fires had completely sold out.Analysts say the 7-inch device helps drive sales of digital media such as ebooks and music, which in turn propels core retail growth for the company.
Amazon may unveil larger versions of the Fire on Thursday in Los Angeles, analysts and media say, which will compete more directly with the iPad.
Although the Kindle now runs on an early version of Google's Android, which Amazon developed into its own operating system, it does not integrate Google Maps into the device. That means users had to access Google Maps via a Web browser, or download map apps from third-party developers.
A Nokia spokesman declined to comment and an Amazon spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment.
Shares of the Internet retailer closed down 0.4 percent at $246.22 on Thursday, after hitting a record high of $250 earlier following the announcement that it had run out of Kindle Fires.
Cooperating with Nokia may help Amazon develop integrated, or "native," mapping functionality for the Kindle Fire without relying on Google Maps. Nokia is one of the world's largest mapping companies, through its 2007 acquisition of Navteq.
Apple took a similar step earlier this year, when it dropped Google Maps in favor of its own mapping features for its next mobile operating system, known as iOS 6. As part of the switch, Apple signed a global licensing deal with TomTom NV, another leading mapping company, for its map content and related information.
In July, Amazon agreed to buy mapping startup UpNext, which specializes in detailed 3D maps of cities and some sporting stadiums.

LONDON (Reuters) - British wholesale gas prices rose on Thursday morning as an unplanned outage at the St Fergus gas terminal reduced North Sea gas supplies, leaving the system undersupplied.
The unplanned outage at the St Fergus terminal would lead to a production loss of 11.5 million cubic metres (mcm) per day and was expected to last for five days, operator Total said.
Gas prices for delivery on Friday were trading around 56.30 pence per therm at 0750 GMT on Thursday, up half a pence from the previous morning, and within-day delivery gas prices were also up about 0.5 pence to 56.50 pence a therm.
National Grid data showed that gas demand in Britain was expected to be 179.5 mcm on Thursday, almost 27 percent below the seasonal norm.
Despite the low demand, the system was expected to be 3.2 mcm short, with total supplies expected at 176.3 mcm.
"Consumption is forecasted up for day-ahead, which is bullish. The other bullish factor is the lower flow from UKCS (UK Continental Shelf)," analysts at Thomson Reuters Point Carbon said.
Further out on the curve, gas prices for delivery in winter were also up slightly, trading around 65.30 pence per therm.
Analysts have said Britain's gas supplies could be squeezed in winter should a cold snap collide with North Sea supply outages or booming Asian demand sap up supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
"What the loss of LNG does, is make peak supply risks more acute and thus we expect to see prices drift upwards in Q4 and be sustained at higher average prices in 2013 than seen in 2012," Barclays Capital said in a research note on Thursday.
BarCap said it expected the UK will lose 13 bcm of LNG supply in 2012 and another 2 bcm on top of that in 2013, but added that the LNG gap would continue to be met by Norwegian pipeline volumes.
"While the UK gas market should remain relatively well supplied this year, the biggest prevailing risk is weather and for a cold Q4 12 to draw down storage and bring back the risks of winter price spikes," the bank said.

The Vueling plane was parked at a remote corner of Schiphol, about two kilometers (1.5 miles) from the main terminal, surrounded by security personnel and several ambulances, according to photographers at the scene.
News website Nu.nl had reported that the plane was escorted to Schiphol by two F16 fighter jets. The report cited the Defense Ministry.
Airport authorities and security services did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Chronic stress, prompted by major life stressors and type A personality traits, is linked to a high risk of stroke, finds research published online in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.
Chronic stress, manifested as physical and/or mental symptoms in response to stressors lasting longer than 6 months has been linked to a heightened risk of heart disease. But its impact on the risk of stroke has not been clear.
The research team base their findings on150 adults, with an average age of 54, who had been admitted to one stroke unit, and 300 randomly selected healthy people of a similar age who lived in the same neighbourhood.
Levels of chronic stress were assessed using the combined quantitative scores of four validated scales, looking at major life events; symptoms, such as anxiety and depression; general wellbeing; and behaviour patterns indicative of type A personality (ERCTA scale).
Type A behaviours include hostility, aggression, impatience and a quick temper. A score of 24 or higher on the ERCTA scale is considered to be indicative of a type A personality.
Participants were also assessed for known biological risk factors for stroke, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, any history of heart rhythm abnormalities, and daytime sleepiness.
And they were quizzed on their lifestyle, including their caffeine, alcohol and energy drink intake, as well as whether they smoked, had a partner, and a job.
The results showed that several factors were independently associated with a heightened risk of stroke.
Compared with the healthy comparison group, the risk of a stroke was almost four times higher among those who had experienced a major life event in the previous year.
A high score on the ERCTA scale more than doubled stroke risk, as did a current or previous history of smoking, and intake of two or more energy drinks a day.
And those with heart rhythm disturbances were more than three times as likely to have a stroke while those with a high daytime sleepiness score almost tripled their risk. And being a man boosted the risk nine-fold.
But when all the factors were assessed together, the risk of a stroke was associated with a stressful life and type A behaviours. And this held true, irrespective of other risk factors, including gender and an unhealthy lifestyle.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Renal denervation improves blood pressure and arterial stiffness in patients with therapy resistant hypertension, according to research presented at ESC Congress 2012 by Mr Klaas Franzen from the University Hospital of Schleswig-Holstein. The findings suggest that renal denervation regenerates blood vessels and could reduce cardiovascular events.
Malignant arterial hypertension was historically treated with surgical thoracolumbar splanchnicectomy, a type of sympathectomy treatment that was introduced in 1938. "A significant reduction in blood pressure response was observed in at least half of the patients who underwent splanchnicectomy," said Mr Franzen. "But the treatment led to severe adverse events such as orthostatic hypotension, anhidrosis and intestinal disturbances. After the discovery of effective antihypertensive drugs, splanchnicectomy became neglected and disregarded over time."
In 2009 the concept of sympathectomy was reintroduced with intravasal catheter-based percutaneous renal sympathetic denervation (RDN) used in patients suffering from resistant arterial hypertension. Recent publications have shown that RDN significantly lowers systolic and diastolic peripheral brachial blood pressure by 32/12 mmHg after 6 months.
Mr Franzen said: "RDN with radiofrequency energy has several important advantages over surgical splanchnicectomy: it is a minimally invasive procedure without significant systematic side effects, it is well tolerated, and recovery times are short."
Arterial hypertension can irrevocably harm blood vessels in the short and long term, subsequently leading to increased aortic/arterial stiffness and arteriosclerosis. "Since central aortic pressures and arterial stiffness are much better predictors for future cardiovascular events than peripheral pressures we focused the present study on the effects of RDN on central hemodynamics and arterial stiffness," said Mr Franzen.
The researchers studied 21 patients with therapy resistant hypertension (61.9% men; mean age 64 years; 5.0?1.3 antihypertensive drugs) and 6 controls (83.3% men; mean age 57 years; 4.3?2.3 antihypertensive drugs). The inclusion criteria were: (i) use of >3 antihypertensive drugs, (ii) peripheral blood pressure at baseline ?150 mmHg, and (iii) exclusion of secondary hypertension and anatomical abnormalities of the renal arteries.
RDN was performed with an RDN radiofrequency ablation catheter system (1). Central hemodynamics and arterial stiffness, i.e. pulse wave velocity (PWV), were recorded with an Arteriograph device (2). Measurements were performed at baseline, and 3 and 6 months after the intervention.
RDN led to an improvement in all parameters compared to baseline. Peripheral systolic blood pressure improved by 7.6% (145 mmHg versus 156 mmHg, p<0.05) after 3 months and by 5.4% (148 mmHg versus 156 mmHg, p<0.05) after 6 months. Central systolic blood pressure improved by 9.5% (147 mmHg versus 161 mmHg, p<0.01) after 3 months and by 6.6% (151 mmHg versus 161 mmHg, p<0.05) after 6 months. Most importantly, PWV improved significantly, both at 3 months (9.4?1.2 m/s versus 10.9?1.8 m/s, p<0.01) and 6 months (9.7?1.8 m/s versus 10.9?1.8 m/s, p<0.01). Univariate analysis of variance (f-test) showed that the improvement of PWV was, at least in part, blood pressure independent.
In controls no significant changes in blood pressure values or PWV were observed.
"Besides peripheral blood pressures, RDN improved central blood pressures and arterial stiffness, i.e. PWV," said Mr Franzen. "According to age adjusted reference values, the improvement of approximately 1m/s PWV observed in our study could be interpreted as a blood vessel rejuvenation of almost 10 years. This suggests that RDN might be a fountain of youth for blood vessels in patients with therapy resistant hypertension."
He added: "Further studies are needed to determine whether the benefits of RDN translate into a reduced risk of cardiovascular events."

? July 26: Facebook Inc. says revenue grew 32 percent to $1.18 billion in the second quarter, slightly above analyst expectations. It had a net loss of 8 cents per share, mainly due to stock compensation expenses following its IPO. Adjusted earnings of 12 cents per share matched Wall Street's expectations. Investors weren't impressed and after a brief spike, Facebook's stock tumbled. It was Facebook's first quarterly earnings report since public trading began on May 18, 2012. Aug. 1: Online review site Yelp Inc. reports a smaller net loss and sharply higher revenue than Wall Street expected, surpassing analysts at a time when many of its fellow freshly public Internet companies are taking a beating from investors. ARVADA, Colo. (AP) ? A nation at war, crippling joblessness and a looming budget standoff that could wreck the economy have been overshadowed in recent days by an issue that polls show doesn't even crack voters' lists of top 10 concerns: abortion.
Missouri Republican Todd Akin's comment that women who were victims of "legitimate rape" rarely become pregnant touched off furious maneuvering by Republicans and Democrats alike, the latest iteration of a campaign that has been driven by both sides' need to court a small slice of the American electorate. Several hundred thousand independent suburban women will play an outsized role in deciding whether President Barack Obama keeps his job.
The issue reverberated Sunday, on the eve of the Republican convention, as Mitt Romney accused Obama's campaign of sinking to a sad low by trying to link the GOP candidate to Akin's statements about rape and abortion.
Romney also conceded that the controversy is hurting the Republican Party, and GOP chairman Reince Priebus said Akin's insistence about staying in the Missouri Senate race could cost the party its shot at winning control of the Senate in November.
"It really is sad, isn't it, with all the issues that America faces for the Obama campaign to continue to stoop to such a low level," Romney said in an interview on "Fox News Sunday."
Romney's comments were in response to Obama's contention that the Republican candidate has locked himself into "extreme positions" on economic and social issues and would surely impose them if elected president.
"I don't think that if Congress presented him with some of the items that are in the Republican platform at this convention that would, for example, entirely roll back women's control over their reproductive health, that he would stand in the way," Obama said in an interview with The Associated Press published Saturday.

Both sides have clashed this year over Romney's calls to end federal funding of Planned Parenthood, Republican demands to let some employers avoid covering workers' birth control costs and a Democratic political operative's chastising of Romney's wife for being a housewife.
Polling data is mixed and hotly debated over whether the abortion issue helps candidates who favor abortion rights or those who oppose them. But Tony Robinson, a political science professor at the University of Colorado, Denver, said that Republicans are in peril this time because the stances they are now talking about ? like banning abortion in cases of rape or restricting birth control ? are ones that are widely unpopular.
"Whatever party is driven to its most extreme positions on this is punished by the electorate," Robinson said.
Democrats and some independent analysts say Republicans kicked off the debate by tacking hard to the right during the GOP primary.
"Rick Santorum is really the person they have to blame for this attention now," said Jennifer Lawless, director of the Women and Politics Institute at American University, referring to the former Pennsylvania senator and strong abortion foe, who fought to pull social conservatives away from Romney during the primary.
In the hours after Akin's comments, Democrats leapt at the chance to link him to the Republican presidential ticket ? almost as quickly as Romney, his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, and other prominent conservatives ? scrambled to condemn the remarks.
Democrats noted that Ryan had co-sponsored a controversial bill of Akin's that they contended would redefine rape, announced a list of abortion rights activists as speakers at their upcoming convention and a weeklong national swing of female surrogates dubbed the "Romney/Ryan: Wrong for Women" tour.
Meanwhile, Republicans, who have their own women-heavy lineup of convention speakers, defended their inclusion of a plank in their party platform outlawing abortion in the case of rape.
Colorado is one of the most competitive presidential states, where pollsters estimate about 100,000 undecided voters ? the majority of whom are female ? will decide the race. Both campaigns are fighting hard in the state for the women's vote.
The Romney campaign holds weekly women's phone banks, where female volunteers gather to call other women and urge them to back the Republican ticket. The Obama campaign holds meetings, house parties and canvasses for women, and has television ads attacking Romney's stance on reproductive rights in heavy rotation.
During a campaign visit earlier this month, Obama was introduced by Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown law student who was called a "slut" by Rush Limbaugh for her prepared testimony to a Senate committee that health insurance should cover birth control.
"When it comes to a woman's right to make her own health care choices," Obama said of his opponents, "they want to take us back to policies better suited to the 1950s than the 21st century. Colorado, you have to make sure it doesn't happen."
On Thursday, in an interview with a Denver television station, Romney was quickly asked how he would close the gender gap that persistently shows women favoring Obama.
"I think the issues women care about are the issues that our campaign is focused on ? which is, Number One, making sure that women and their kids and other members of their family are able to have good jobs," he said.
Analysts say both candidates face risks.
Romney needs only look to the last competitive election in Colorado, when Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet defied the 2010 GOP landslide by eking a narrow victory over his Republican opponent, Ken Buck.
Bennet painted his opponent as insensitive to women's issues while a debate also raged over a statewide ballot measure to grant legal rights to a fertilized egg. It was overwhelmingly defeated by a 70-30 percent margin but is returning to the ballot in November. Democrats here have eagerly noted that Ryan sponsored a similar bill in Congress.
Veteran Colorado pollster Floyd Ciruli said Obama must be careful not to look "extreme" in his use of reproductive issues, but that he's been lucky because Republicans keep bringing them up on their own.
Ciruli said the women swing voters the president is targeting "love politics to be above politics. They love for all of us to be together. They can be very put off by narrow appeals."
Both sides note that Obama's pitch on women's issues may also rally his sometimes disaffected base ? just as critical in a nail-biter race where few have yet to choose sides. Indeed, on a recent morning in this key swing suburb, every one of a half-dozen women interviewed on the contest had already made up her mind.
Colleen Faust, a 70-year-old retired teacher and Democrat, recalled writing a paper about a woman's right to birth control when she graduated college in 1965. "I grew up in pre-Roe v. Wade and I don't trust the Republicans," she said, referring to the landmark Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion.
Cherie Harris, 48, a self-identified strong conservative who owns a firearms and self-defense business, scoffed at arguments about women's health issues. "That's a big smoke screen," she said. "My 21 and 22-year-olds, how're they going to be able to find jobs? That's what I worry about as a woman."

Ireland is now part of an academic network which hopes to improve disaster preparedness in cities worldwide. NUI Galway?s experts have joined with 67 other universities in efforts to increase society?s resilience to natural and man-made disasters.
The project, called ANDROID (Academic Network for Disaster Resilience to Optimise Educational Development), aims to promote co-operation and innovation among European higher education institutions to increase society?s resilience to disasters of human and natural origin ? such as earthquakes or the damage caused by ongoing wars.
ANDROID, supported by an EU grant worth Eur800,000, will run for three years and is led by University of Salford?s Centre for Disaster Resilience, based in the UK.
So far a consortium of partners from 64 European higher education institutions has embarked on the project, joined by three institutions from Australia, Canada and Sri-Lanka.
Alexandra Revez from the School of Geographyand Archaeology at NUI Galway, whose current research looks at flooding issues inIreland, explains: ?We need to stay one step ahead of disaster, and be prepared for all kinds of eventualities. In the case of earthquakes, this might involve strict building regulations, in the case of flash flooding this might involve public preparedness.?
Over three years, the consortium partners will describe, analyse and compare the capacity of European cities and higher education institutions to address disaster risk. ANDROID will provide the link between the research and the public, helping to reinforce the connection between education and society.
?There is now recognition of the need for collaboration on a large scale that involves a plurality of actors. ANDROID is based on an inter-disciplinary consortium of partners that comprises scientists from applied human, social and natural disciplines. Addressing disaster risk is an endless or continuous process that cannot stop,? says Professor Amaratunga from the Centre for Disaster Resilience.
The project was inspired by the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) ?Making Cities Resilient? campaign. The campaign advocates widespread commitment by local governments to build resilience to disasters, increase national government support to cities to strengthen local capacities and to develop global goals that are applicable for all cities.
The next phase of ANDROID will involve using all the data collected by the consortium partners to create laws and other practical measures to build resilience.

The Met accidentally let slip their plans to arrest Julian Assange should he leave the Ecuadoran embassy in London, with pictures of their notes appearing in newspapers Saturday.
A policeman outside the embassy was photographed carrying a handwritten document marked "restricted" and "decision -- supporting rationale".
It said the WikiLeaks founder was to be arrested "under all circumstances" should he step outside the embassy, which is situated in a mansion block next to Harrods, in Knightsbridge.
The document suggested that if the 41-year-old Australian attempted to leave the embassy in a vehicle, under diplomatic immunity or in a diplomatic bag, then he should be arrested.
"The document is one officer's notes from a briefing," a Scotland Yard spokesman said.
"Our objective is to arrest Julian Assange for breach of bail. Under no circumstances would any arrest be made which was in breach of diplomatic immunity."
Assange, having exhausted all his legal options in Britain to avoid extradition to Sweden -- where he is wanted for questioning over sex crime allegations -- walked into the Ecuadoran embassy on June 19 and claimed asylum. Quito has granted the request.
Assange fears he would be passed on to the United States, which he enraged by releasing a vast cache of its confidential government files.
Britain says it is legally obliged to extradite him to fellow European Union member Sweden, should he leave the embassy.
The police document reads: "EQ embassy brief -- summary of current position re Assange.
"Action required -- Assange to be arrested under all circumstances.
"He comes out with dip. immun., as dip. bag. in dip. bag (right to life) in dip. vehicle -- ARRESTED."
The document also warns of the "possibility of distraction", suggesting police fear that his supporters might try to cause a commotion, providing Assange with enough cover to leave.
The Organization of American States declared "solidarity and support" Friday for Ecuador in its position over Assange.
The meeting was convened at Ecuador's request to consider a resolution rejecting any attempt to put at risk the "inviolability" of its London embassy.
In the resolution, the 34-member regional body rejected "any attempt that might put at risk the inviolability of the premises of diplomatic missions."

While a broken-color Thoroughbred is rarely seen, some breeders are specializing in their production. However, at the moment they are not seen on the racetrack. The most unusual coloring seen in the breed was The Tetrarch, an undefeated Irish horse which was born in 1911. The Tetrarch was grey with white splotches. All solid colors are commonly seen as are white markings on the face and legs.
Steeple-chasing and racing are the main pursuits of the thoroughbred. It is also found in dressage, show-jumping, eventing and other horse sports. It is not as strong and solid as some of the other breeds which are sometimes preferred for these pursuits. Its excitable nature sometimes goes against it too. Smaller specimens may be used for polo and polocrosse as it is fast and maneuverable.
The Thoroughbred had its beginnings in England and is now found throughout the world. It is a great ?improver? of other breeds and the blood-lines can be found in the backgrounds of many breeds. When crossed with heavier horses, it adds elegance and speed. Such crossbred horses are in high demand for eventing and hunting.

South African President Jacob Zuma met Wednesday with disgruntled miners at the Lonmin facility where 44 people have died in a wildcat strike, as tensions rippled to nearby shafts.
The visit was his second since police gunned down 34 armed miners one week ago, in a crackdown on the violent strike that had earlier left 10 people dead in inter-union attacks.
"This is painful to all of us. It is not acceptable for people to die where talks can be held," Zuma told about 2,000 workers, speaking to them in a field while an aide held an umbrella over him.
"But I do feel your pain and have come personally to express that. I am certain that the commission of inquiry will get to the bottom of what happened here."
Zuma has announced a judicial commission to investigate the police shoot-out, which shocked South Africa in the deadliest day of protest since apartheid.
Police are undertaking their own investigation, while the independent police watchdog is also probing the police conduct.
That's done little to soothe the tempers among the 3,000 workers, mainly rock drill operators, who launched an illegal strike on August 10 at Lonmin's platinum mine in Marikana to demand higher wages of 12,500 rand ($1,500, 1,200 euros) a month.
On Wednesday, similar demands were being pressed at the nearby Royal Bafokeng Platinum Mine, where 600 rock drillers downed tools.
Anglo American Platinum, the world's top producer, said it had also received a list of demands from its workers in Marikana but declined to comment on the issues raised.
The new disputes emerged following Lonmin's first talks late Tuesday with representatives of the strikers.
Anglican Bishop Johannes Seoka, who facilitated the talks, said the meeting was cordial and that both sides showed a willingness to cooperate.
"All we ask management is to please allow workers to give them their demands, to listen to them and to engage with them because the workers have been asking just to talk," he told AFP.
"If they had talked earlier on, the massacre would have been avoided," he added.
Lonmin spokeswoman Sue Vey said the meeting had not focused on workers' demands, but rather on easing tensions.
"It was a meeting of employers and employees, basically discussing the current situation," she said.
"It's the first time they've managed to sit down (and talk) and that's good."
The strikers say they currently earn 4,000 rand. Lonmin says that when their bonuses and other allowances are included, the workers earn around 11,000 rand, with a nine-percent increase set to kick in on October 1.
Workers who attended the talks said they also wanted the release of the 259 people arrested after the police crackdown last Thursday, when officers gunned down 34 people.
"We want our brothers who (were) arrested to be freed, without bail. They must attend the memorial service" Thursday, said Kwenene Msindiseni, a rock driller.
South Africa is preparing services across the country on Thursday, including one near the site of the police killings.
Many of the victims were migrant workers, and most of their bodies have already been returned to their hometowns.
Amid the preparations for the memorials, mining companies tried to contain the labour unrest.
Royal Bafokeng spokeswoman Kea Kalebe said the protest was confined to one shaft, and that the company was still clarifying the demands of the miners, who told reporters they were also seeking a wage of 12,500 rand a month.
"We are still trying to establish the facts, the situation is calm, they were singing and we are obviously monitoring the situation," she said.
Johannesburg-listed Royal Bafokeng Platinum is controlled by the investment company of South Africa's Bafokeng tribe.
Anglo American Platinum spokeswoman Mpumi Sithole said the company had been presented with a broad list of demands by a group of employees, who had not engaged their union, and who wanted a response by Friday.
"It's not a wage demand," she said, declining to elaborate.
But she added that management's door was open to workers.
"We (are) engaging with our employees constantly and we've made sure that our engagement structures are open and that our employees know exactly when and where to come to if they've got any issues that they would like to bring to our attention," she said.

A little music training in childhood goes a long way in improving how the brain functions in adulthood when it comes to listening and the complex processing of sound, according to a new Northwestern University study.
The impact of music on the brain has been a hot topic in science in the past decade. Now Northwestern researchers for the first time have directly examined what happens after children stop playing a musical instrument after only a few years -- a common childhood experience.
Compared to peers with no musical training, adults with one to five years of musical training as children had enhanced brain responses to complex sounds, making them more effective at pulling out the fundamental frequency of the sound signal.
The fundamental frequency, which is the lowest frequency in sound, is crucial for speech and music perception, allowing recognition of sounds in complex and noisy auditory environments.
"Thus, musical training as children makes better listeners later in life," said Nina Kraus, the Hugh Knowles Professor of Neurobiology, Physiology and Communication Sciences at Northwestern.
"Based on what we already know about the ways that music helps shape the brain," she said, "the study suggests that short-term music lessons may enhance lifelong listening and learning."
"A Little Goes a Long Way: How the Adult Brain is Shaped by Musical Training in Childhood" will be published in the Aug. 22 edition of the Journal of Neuroscience.
"We help address a question on every parent's mind: 'Will my child benefit if she plays music for a short while but then quits training?'" Kraus said.
Many children engage in group or private music instruction, yet, few continue with formal music classes beyond middle or high school.
But most neuroscientific research has focused on the rare and exceptional music student who has continued an active music practice during college or on the rarer case of a professional musician who has spent a lifetime immersed in music.
"Our research captures a much larger section of the population with implications for educational policy makers and the development of auditory training programs that can generate long-lasting positive outcomes," Kraus said.
For the study, young adults with varying amounts of past musical training were tested by measuring electrical signals from the auditory brainstem in response to eight complex sounds ranging in pitch. Because the brain signal is a faithful representation of the sound signal, researchers are able to observe how key elements of the sound are captured by the nervous system and how these elements might be weakened or strengthened in different people with different experiences and abilities.
Forty-five adults were grouped into three age- and IQ- matched groups based on histories of musical instruction. One group had no musical instruction; another had 1 to 5 years; and the other had to 6 to 11 years. Both musically trained groups began instrumental practice around age 9 years, a common age for in-school musical instruction to begin. As predicted, musical training during childhood led to more robust neural processing of sounds later in life.
Prior research on highly trained musicians and early bilinguals revealed that enhanced brainstem responses to sound are associated with heightened auditory perception, executive function and auditory communication skills.
"From this earlier research, we infer that a few years of music lessons also confer advantages in how one perceives and attends to sounds in everyday communication situations, such as noisy restaurants or rides on the "L," Kraus said.
A running theme in Kraus' research is "your past shapes your present."
"The way you hear sound today is dictated by the experiences with sound you've had up until today," she said. "This new finding is a clear embodiment of this theme."
In past research, Kraus and her team examined how bilingual upbringing and long-term music lessons affect the auditory brain and how the brain changes after a few weeks of intensive auditory experiences, such as computerized training. Their current research is investigating the impact of socioeconomic hardships on adolescent brain function.
"We hope to use this new finding, in combination with past discoveries, to understand the type of education and remediation strategies, such as music classes and auditory-based training that might be most effective in combating the negative impact of poverty," she said.
By understanding the brain's capacity to change and then maintain these changes, the research can inform the development of effective and long-lasting auditory-based educational and rehabilitative programs.

Mercedes-Benz and smart?s green designs picked up quite a few awards during the latest design competitions.
With the "2012 Green GOOD DESIGN" award, the "Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design" has paid tribute to the one-off Mercedes-Benz BIOME and smart forvision vehicles, as well as the smart ebike. The jury praised the exceptionally environmentally-friendly and sustainable designs of these vehicles in particular.
In the "Automotive Brand Contest 2012" meanwhile ? held by the German Design Council ? Mercedes-Benz has made it onto the list of winners no less than 16 times.
Hundreds of products from numerous countries were put to the vote for the "2012 Green GOOD DESIGN" award. A jury comprising some of the world's leading design experts crowned the one-off Mercedes-Benz Biome and smart forvision vehicles as winners, along with the smart ebike, awarding them the internationally renowned prize - ranked among the oldest and most famous awards for designers.
In addition to their design, the vehicles were primarily assessed in terms of such criteria as energy efficiency, recycling and sustainability.
The one-off Mercedes-Benz BIOME concept represent?s Mercedes-Benz? revolutionary vision of a vehicle which, taking its inspiration from nature, is fully integrated into the ecosystem, from the moment of its creation right through to the end of its service life.
The Mercedes-Benz BIOME grows in a completely organic environment from seeds grown in a nursery. Out on the road the car emits pure oxygen, and at the end of its lifespan it can be simply composted or used as building material.
The smart forvision is also a one-off vehicle concept which combines a futuristic design with technologies relating to energy efficiency, lightweight design and temperature management. One particular eye-catching feature is its roof made of transparent organic solar cells. It allows light to pass through and at the same time generates energy which is used to power the multimedia components as well as the fans which assist with climate management in the vehicle interior.
The smart ebike boasts an unconventional design in line with the style of the popular brand as well as functions appropriate for city use. These come courtesy of high-quality components such as the hydraulic disc brakes, LED light with daytime driving light function and also an exceptionally high-performance drive system with a completely maintenance and oil-free carbon toothed belt.
The international expert jury of the German Design Council was faced with selecting the winners of the "Automotive Brand Award 2012" from among no less than 350 submitted suggestions. The Mercedes-Benz brand fared particularly well, with its products making it onto the list of winners no less than 16 times.
A particular highlight picked out as the "Best of the Best" was the near-series one-off Concept Style Coup? vehicle. It provides a glimpse of the next member of the new compact car family from Mercedes-Benz.
The four-door style rebel "sets the benchmark for avantgarde design in the executive segment", according to Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz Cars. "Its breathtaking proportions, sinewy fluid surfaces and sculptural lines are the physical expression of our dynamic design idiom."
Other awards for excellent design were also picked up for both the exterior and interior of the new A-Class, the SL-Class, the CLS Shooting Brake and the interior of the B-Class. The German Design Council also crowned a number of concept vehicles as winners, including the Mercedes-Benz F125, smart for-us, smart forvision and the standard version of the smart ebike.
Worthy of a special mention by the design experts were the innovative headlamps of the Concept Style Coup?. They are reminiscent of the ever wary, almost intimidating eyes of a predatory animal. In standby mode they shine red. The indicators are another special feature: when activated, the individual elements light up one after another in a "Mexican wave" effect. Additional innovations from Mercedes-Benz which collected awards include the DICE sculpture, the Digital Drive Style app and the Mercedes-Benz diamond grille
