It's Money-Time! How to Focus on Profit in the Era of Distractions ...

Posted by Carla Young on October 29, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Consider how you spend your day, your week, your month. Think about how much of your time is spent on ACTUAL revenue generating activities compared to all the time spent chasing potential opportunities (even better, use a time tracker to document exactly how you spend your time).

Chances are you spend less time than you think.

So where does all the time go? A good guess is a big chunk of it is frittered away with administrative tasks, all the necessary to-do?s that have to get done to keep your business clogs turning. Another huge time-drain is all the activities that lead up to the profit: generating leads, prospecting, working on strategic relationships (and yes, social media).

Now imagine what would happen if you could cut through all the other stuff and focus solely on moneymaking tasks. How much would your business grow if only you had more time to dedicate to pursuing profit? What could you do with a more profitable enterprise?

The purpose of Momentum Monday is to help you focus on momentum building activities. In essence, to energize your week starting every Monday and get you focused on core activities and away from deadly distractions. Nothing is more important to the success of your business than profit.

How to Focus on Profit in the Era of Distractions

The best way to avoid distractions is to know exactly what you need to focus on. Start by establishing a hierarchy of activities to guide how you spend your time, placing revenue-generating activities at the top.

Money Time ? Spend the majority of your time on direct moneymaking activities. What this looks like ultimately depends on your business. For example, if you are a coach or consultant, this is your billable time spent working with clients. If you have a product business, this is the time spent selling.

Handling Billing ? Consider this a close second to money time. This is the time you spend making sure that all the necessary paperwork is in order to get paid. Billing should be your first priority when you aren?t directly working on money time.

Closing Sales ? Getting new customers or clients to sign on the dotted line is your next priority. It?s important not to confuse closing with generating new leads, which comes further down the list. Focus first on the prospects who are almost through your sales funnel and ready to make a decision.

New Proposals ? A step further down the sales funnel, generating new proposals is a key profit activity. Don?t fall the ?Too busy? trap and neglect your proposals. Make the time to get those interested leads pricing information!

Lead Generation ? Bringing new leads into your sales funnel is a key activity; however, beware: it is a very broad category and not every activity counts as true lead generation. Focus first on activities that bring you guaranteed leads, like attending your networking breakfast or reaching out to past clients.

Pursuing Potential ? Creating or pursuing potential opportunities is the last category because it?s the farthest from actual money time. While still important, note that it often turns into a distraction when it comes before other priorities.

Education as Mimesis ? Matthew Kruger-Ross

Education as Mimesis

For EDUC 901
29 October 2012

It is the third or fourth session of Stephen?s Curriculum Studies colloquium and I experience the sensation of stepping outside my body to watch and listen to myself share a particular insight I?ve pulled from the reading and current discussion to my prior experience. As I approach a phrase I mean to use ironically, I raise my hands to insert air quotes and my mouth forms to produce a distinct clicking noise. Time stops. My peers and Stephen stare at me. I?ve just imitated Kieran and I acknowledge as such as an aside and the room erupts in laughter. Where did this come from? I did not do it consciously; it just happened.

Introduction

The goal in the next few pages is to explore the relationship between mimesis and education. Mimetics ? mimesis, imitation, mimicry ? is largely absent from educational conversations (excluding the ones included below, of course). I have hunches as to the reasons for why mimesis has fallen out of favor and plan to weave them through an analysis of perspectives on mimetics. The question that elicited this analysis originally concerned the virtues and ethics of mimesis in education, but it is the pragmatic that demands a shift in the question to an understanding of mimesis in the practice of pedagogy. Put bluntly, we (as participants in educational endeavors) are already always engage in mimesis ? so why not understand just what we are doing?

Personal and Current Contexts

We all would like to think that we are our own person, independent of any one else. We are told from birth (and as adults in every diversity training program) that we are unique. Pluralism at its best is the simultaneous acknowledgement and celebration of multiple perspectives. Plato?s critique of the poets in The Republic, Itard?s work with socializing Victor, and Locke?s focus on the virtuous gentleman calls these everyday presuppositions into question. How does mimesis occur in the everyday life of a school and, more broadly, in teaching and learning? As easy as it would be to ignore and explain away the phenomenon, something is left undone by not exploring it further.

At present Western culture is obsessed with owning and possessing ideas in the same way as owning cars, houses, and cell phones. In the age of digital technologies and global communication capabilities, is it possible ? is it realistic ? to attribute and own ideas? This begins a (dangerous) change of pace: Where does ownership lie when a student learns (absorbs) another?s idea? (e.g. from Plato, Locke, etc.). In due time I will call upon the ideas of others and reference their contributions to understandings of mimesis. Are they my ideas? Or are they simply the other writers that I cite? Is it a combination? Copyright law and traditional conceptualizations of who owns what have been transformed by the revolution in digital communications. Plagiarism is a damning offense in academia; you must cite and footnote and when in doubt, cite and footnote again.

Returning to how imitation and mimesis occurs within the realm of ideas and educational life, consider teacher identity. Is a teacher truly an innovative educator or are they imitating practices that have been deemed as good teaching? Considering content and curricula; Whose knowledge is being passed on to children (or constructed in children?s minds depending on your philosophical bent)? In what ways are teachers role models for students insomuch as we expect that student will embody the teacher?s own behavior and beliefs? How do students influence each other in their learning? Influence and model are concepts that attempt to name mimesis but lack a full expression of the phenomenon. Donald?s (1991) framework of mimetic culture will be helpful in moving forward.

Mimetic Culture

Merlin Donald in his book Origins of the Modern Mind (1991) presents a theory of human cognitive development grounded in evolution that offers an interesting perspective on mimesis in the generation of human culture. Put extremely simply, over time man evolved through cultural frameworks that involved the integration of specific cognitive tools that assisted in the development of humans. Beginning with primates, the first humans existed in an Episodic Culture, transitioned to a Mimetic Culture, then to a Mythic Culture, and finally to the External Symbolic Storage and Theoretic Culture. Donald argues that the Mimetic Culture was the critical mediator between the transition from ape to human (p. 162). Instead of relying solely on episodic memory (the core of the Episodic Culture), hominids in the Mimetic Culture transitioned into interactions and relationships based on intentional mimetic representation. ?Mimesis rests on the ability to produce conscious, self-initiated, representational acts that are intentional but not linguistic? (Donald, 1991, p. 168, emphasis added). Within this developmental model of cognition, language does not appear until the Mythic cultural stage.

Mimetic representation operates in multiple modalities and includes gestures, facial expressions, and tone of voice. Donald?s framework posits that mimesis was key for the development of social groups, norms, and, ultimately, ?the first truly human culture? (1991, p. 193). The obvious lack of language in mimetic culture is intriguing. Without words and grammar, mimetic representation allowed for the development of tools, games, play, dance and other rituals that over time developed into the foundations of social structure. Mimesis remains central even to modern cultures: ?No matter how evolved our oral-linguistic culture, and no matter how sophisticated the rich varieties of symbolic material surrounding us, mimetic scenarios still form the expressive heart of human social interchange? (Donald, 1991, p. 189). From the perspective offered by this developmental model for human cognition, mimetic representation is not only integral to human culture but it is impossible to ignore.

Donald?s developmental framework situates mimesis as ?the most basic medium of human communication? (p. 188). Adopting this presupposition, we move to Plato, Itard, and Locke?s treatment of mimetics concerning teaching and learning.

Mimesis in Education: Plato, Itard, Locke

Plato tackles mimesis in Books III and X in The Republic. Mimetic representation of the epic poets, and in particular Homer, is Plato?s target. He creates a distinction between the (1) simple narrative and (2) mimesis in the sharing of a poet?s story. Simple narrative is appropriate and acceptable while mimetic poetry is forbidden. In the oral presentation of the poem a poet is not to imitate or embody the personae of the character who is speaking or acting. Imitation is dangerous for the listeners and for the virtuous man/city. Plato does not necessarily argue for the banishment of the oral tradition, but a severe censorship. If humans are to have a mind then their charge in life is to learn to think for himself and identify what is true about the world as it is, not trusting mere imitations of the world. Plato?s critique of the need for the philosopher-kings? censorship of the poets situates the value and nature of art in human culture. With an eye to education, Plato would be wary of mimetic representation on the part of the teacher. Simple truths may be acceptable, but imitating another would be too risky for the greater good.

Itard?s Wild Boy of Aveyron offers a direct educational implementation of mimetic representation and mimetic theory, approach that is enacted to this day in Montessori schools (Ross, 2012). Itard takes Victor into his care and attempts to assimilate him into human society. While Victor is spoken at/to during his training it is presupposed that he cannot engage linguistically. The communication between Itard and Madame Gu?rin to Victor is based in imitating gestures and bodily movements. Considering Plato?s argument that humans should not be imitating truth but rather focused on identifying truth in and of itself, Victor?s mimetic behavior would suggest a certain emptiness, a going-through-the-motions without meaning or understanding. The features of mimetic culture that Donald (1991) suggests are demonstrate in the film. Victor communicates his needs and desires via bodily gestures and vocal grunting. What remains questionable is where mimetic representation transitions into learning and embodied knowing. Is Victor acting out meaningless (for him) actions as he is ?taught? his alphabet? Within the lens of Donald?s mimetic culture, would Victor have been able to absorb and transition more quickly? More efficiently? Can Donald?s developmental theory even be applied in this way?

Locke?s model for an ideal education, beyond the body, virtue, and academic curriculum, frames educational encounters as a series of conversations between the student and other learned, virtuous gentlemen. Connecting the mimetic cultures of the past, Donald (1991) threads mimetic culture to the present by referencing the Vygotskian pedagogy. Specifically, Vygotsky?s zone of proximal development (ZPD) is presented as a modern mimetically-based tool for teaching and learning. The types of conversations proposed by Locke seem to suggest the context of Vygotsky?s ZPD; communication cannot be too difficult or too simple but just right to encourage learning. In the modern day classroom this continues to evolve in the heterogeneous groupings minds so that the smarter will rub off on the not-as-smart. The result, in theory, is for the not-as smart minds to imitate the smarter and thereby becoming smarter. The conclusion is commonsensical and is, essentially, Locke?s argument that to educate a virtuous gentleman he must be surrounded by other virtuous individuals. Is this all that bad?

Concluding Thoughts and So what?

Kemp (2006) attempts the salvation of mimesis in education by approaching the phenomenon tangentially via hermeneutics. While mimesis has been pushed to the edge of pedagogy (Kemp describes it as repressed), understanding the teacher-student relationship is impossible without it. In education we traditionally focus on the formation of students. Drawing on Paul Ric?ur?s theory of narrative, Kemp reconnects mimesis to education:

We form and teach ourselves the moment we appropriate stories and ideas?which is a re-figuration. This is the actual mimesis, the creative representation (the putting forth) of a ?hermeneutic identity? ? We can only retrieve the narrative?s meaning because we already are familiar with the meaning given by the everyday world in which we live and in relation to which we understand the meaning of actions, goals, means, success, defeat and so forth. (Kemp, 2006, pp. 175-176)

Kemp references Aristotle?s critique of Plato?s denunciation of the poets in The Republic in ultimately framing all of culture as series of mimetic acts. Education, however, continues to resist mimesis: ?Today the position is that we in no way mimic anything in the process of learning? (Kemp, 2006, 177). This is not the case in other contexts; athletes imitate their coaches, musicians imitate their tutors, and craftspeople work as apprentices to masters. While a full exploration of the roots of the falling out of favor of imitation within the teacher-student relationship is beyond the scope of this analysis, the separation between pedagogy and mimesis begins with Plato and Aristotle and continues through time into neoclassicism, romanticism, and protestantism.

Returning again to Donald?s (1991) distinction of mimesis as intentional representation, it is clearer that an additional distinction needs to be made ? the phenomenon of unintentional imitation or pre-consciousness mimesis. Locke?s conceptualization of the education of a virtuous gentlemen relies on covert imitation. Itard?s work with Victor was focused, transparent, and intentional mimesis. But what of unintentional mimetic representation? In what ways are educators and students acting out (unconsciously imitating) particular ways of being that are not their own? Or are these imitations their own? Even with the distinction of intentional and unintentional imitation, does an escape route exist?

?Mimesis must be understood as a productive imitation that enters into all individual formation and education? (Kemp, 2006, 183). The question is not whether education should acknowledge imitation as a tool for teaching and learning but rather how mimesis should be integrated into the pedagogical context.

The teacher is the representative of the historical community. The teacher, highly?critical or not, is the intermediary of traditions, for even critiques must be based on premises and conceptions of man in order to be sound. Consequently, the teacher has something to offer the student, something to be imitated; the teacher cannot merely be the occasion that spurs the student to bring out truths hidden inside. The best teacher is the one who can make his or her student autonomous. Mimesis must be a creative imitation, and that naturally can only happen if the student appreciates the teacher?even when considering a particular teacher as the best teacher for him or herself. The teacher forms the student, but the student forms him or herself through the choice of teacher he or she wants to follow as the master. (Kemp, 2006, 183)

Creative mimesis is the term used to reframe imitation within pedagogy. There is an expectation that the student (apprentice) will imitate the actions and behaviours of the master and ultimately move just beyond the skill and creativity of the master. If mimetic representation is conscious, if it is distinguishable, something can be done with it. What needs attention is not a resolving or diminishing, but an acknowledging and embodying.

2012 Bajaj Discover 125ST vs Hero Ignitor vs Honda CBF Stunner ...

The three bikes in the test started, obviously, with the Bajaj Discover 125ST, it is all-new and OVERDRIVE?s quest to keep the crown in each automotive segment current is well established. So the comparo was on. We also needed to get a sense of Hero?s new 125, the Ignitor. Initially I wanted to compare these to the Honda Shine since the customers who vote with their money buy more of that Honda than any other 125cc motorcycle in the market. But we scrapped the Shine for a Stunner so you could see yourself what Hero has managed to do, or not managed to achieve, with their Ignitor which is, under its new skin, identical to Honda?s more expensive 125cc motorcycle.

So we ended up with essentially the three motorcycles that are either the 125cc champion at this time, or want to be. Let?s get on with the test.

Design, build and finish

It?s obvious at the first glance that the Discover is quite a piece of work. It?s radically different from its predecessor. It?s a large, rounded motorcycle where the previous generation was skinny to the point of making Kate Moss look like she had love handles. This one is more fleshed out and I do like that. This also happens to solve my personal biggest ergonomics issue with the Discover - the tank used to be so ridiculously narrow that I couldn?t grasp it with my knees.

It also appears significantly larger than either of the other two motorcycles here, though the actual difference in length and wheelbase isn?t actually that much. I believe this impression of size will be valuable in the showroom. That said, I cannot say this is a wonderful looking motorcycle. Distinctive in the segment, yes, but pretty? The lines themselves are actually quite nice but it?s the heavy handed use of black plastics at the rear that ruin any impression of a lithe motorcycle for me. The hugger is impossibly large and an inch and a half later begins a fairly large splatter guard and then there is a substantial number plate hanger as well. So comprehensive is this coverage that you almost will not notice the rear monoshock and I think that is a miss.

Between the other two, it?s a close call. The Ignitor is based on the Stunner?s lines but when you see them together you note a clear emphasis on a less sporty, more practical appearance. The screen is integrated into the fairing, for example, and the chain is housed in a full cover on the Hero. In my eyes it makes the Ignitor more true visually to its role as a commuter. But if I were a young colt out for his first or second motorcycle, I?d still pick the Stunner as the looker in the segment. But leave the looks alone and look closer. All three are extremely well-built and as we have come to expect, finish levels are very, very good on all three.

Engines, performance and economy

I believe that in the commuter segment, the 125 is a good place to be in displacement terms for riders. They have as much as 30-40 per cent more power but retain nearly the same economy as the 100cc motorcycles. But Bajaj once again breaks the mould with the Discover, giving it 13PS, which used to be the peak power that the Pulsar 150 used to claim just a few years ago. With the other two bikes making 11.2PS and weighing a good 4kg more than the Discover, the performance end should tip in the favour of the Bajaj.

But before we go into that, we have to pause to take note of the engines themselves. The Honda engine that is in the Stunner and the Ignitor is a well-known unit. It works reliably, offers great economy, is refined and quite enjoyable to punt about town. It is also old-school. Like most other motorcycles in the segment, it is a basic two-valve SOHC single cylinder engine that breathes through a carburettor (the Stunner FI gets fuel injection but is expensive). It?s facetious to say a four-valve head in today?s day and age is a revolution but Bajaj have, at least, moved on from the two-valve head with? this Discover. The rest of the engine, two spark plugs aside, is similar to the Honda in essential configuration. But the better breathing afforded by the four valves allows the Bajaj more than just bigger power figures while matching peak torque levels of the Honda engine.

As we saw in the Pulsar 200NS, the Discover engine also gains a level of refinement we have not seen on Bajaj?s bikes before. It isn?t necessarily a quiet engine but vibration is tightly controlled and of the three bikes here, long, high speed highway runs produced the least buzzing and the consequent numb hands. The Hondas do seem to accelerate a bit quicker at lower revs than the Discover but the Bajaj escapes their attentions very quickly indeed.

In fact, the impression of acceleration is just that because the Bajaj is in complete control on the performance front. The Honda and the Hero can almost match the Discover?s top speed (between 101 and 103kmph for all three), but that is the only parity on the performance front. The Discover crosses the 60kmph in 5.71 seconds, which is half a second quicker than the Stunner which proves to be the second quickest - the Ignitor is 0.3 behind the Honda. The Stunner manages to hold on to this gap through the quarter mile as well, but the Ignitor falls behind a bit more. On the brakes, all three are nearly even, though the Ignitor takes a marginally smaller distance to produce a full on emergency stop from 60kmph,

Where the Hero and the Honda trump the Discover is the fuel economy. The Discover produces eminently acceptable numbers. City mileage was 57.2kmpl while highway runs produce 67kmpl - that is 59.65kmpl overall. The Stunner, on the other hand, manages 63.9kmpl in the city but roughly the same economy on the highway, for a 64.7kmpl overall figure. We were expecting the Ignitor to produce nearly identical figures and it does, more or less. 64.8kmpl in the city and 68.9kmpl on the highway. The latter boosts its overall figure to 68.9kmpl, making it the most fuel efficient motorcycle in this test, if only by a hair.

Ride, handling and braking

It sounds stupid but the first time I rode the Discover I couldn?t figure out whether it had extremely good drum brakes up front or a disc brake. Even a glance at the master cylinder didn?t register, honest. What I realized after I looked at the bike properly, performance tested it and all was that the Discover doesn?t lack braking power but it appears that the bite from the disc has been tuned back to offer a more friendly feel. There is more travel in the brake lever and brake force arrives as you squeeze it harder and harder but the feel is excellent for inexperienced hands - many of which are often scared of discs because they can be grabby and sharp. The Hero and the Honda are similar in brake feel to each other, and to the Discover, but with more bite and a tighter feel at the lever.

Ride quality is important in this segment. Make a motorcycle that is sporty but too stiff and you will have upset customers on your hands. All three here, I?m happy to say, achieve good ride qualities. But Bajaj seem to be able to extract a level of suppleness from their suspensions that Honda isn?t willing to yet. The Discover, with its telescopic forks up front and gas-charged monoshock at the rear absorbs fairly large holes in the road very smoothly.

In comparison, the Ignitor and the Stunner feel stiffer, though the difference isn?t that great. They are both extremely good in terms of having to live with over monsoon-broken roads but there is a softness to the Discover that takes the sting out of bad roads.

That said, the Bajaj isn?t wallowy in the corners either. In fact, it has a lower, wider handlebar which makes it more responsive in the corners. In comparison, the Ignitor felt a little bit taller and more accurate than the Bajaj but the Stunner feels much taller than both. This doesn?t actually affect cornering ability, but makes the front wheel feel farther away which takes time to get used to.

But what makes the Bajaj harder to corner are its tyres. The Stunner and the Ignitor both get very good rubber and it shows. Cornering in dicey, slippery conditions on an off-camber road - that?s the true situation in the pictures on these pages - was confidently handled by both the Hero and the Honda. But there comes a point on the Disco when you simply cannot push any further. The reason is the rear tyre. It has a distinctly square profile where the front (and both the other bikes) have more rounded profiles. What that does it make edge grip meagre and when you get off you have to look close to see that what looks like a fat chicken strip is actually tread carrying on to a nearly vertical surface that blends into the sidewall. Like we said of the P200NS, but to a much larger extent, better tyres will make the Discover a much happier motorcycle to punt about.

Yes, I know these aren?t expected to be cornering demons in the first place but hey, if this is your first or second motorcycle, would you not corner till you finally get a bigger, more sporty motorcycle?

To rank them, overall I?d say Discover and Ignitor draw, with Stunner a hair behind - Discover ride advantage matches Ignitor?s handling advantage. Stunner is a little harder to get used to the feel of thanks to its taller handlebar, so third.

Verdict

So which is the best motorcycle here? The Stunner is the oldest motorcycle here in design terms but also the sportiest to look at and if that floats your boat, it should be the one you spend on. But the Ignitor, which is identical under the skin to the Honda is actually slightly better in our opinion by a tiny fraction. Its lower handlebar - one of the only differences between the two styling aside - does it a small favour by making the feedback from the front seem more immediate and allows you a bit more confidence in it. It happens to be roughly a thousand bucks more expensive than the Stunner though if you?re really stretching your budget, the Honda saves you a small, but possibly vital, bit of your cash outlay.

The Bajaj Discover has more power, better performance, slightly better engine refinement, a supple ride quality and a Rs 6,000-odd price advantage on its side. Ultimately, that is enough to overcome its poorer OEM tyres, the sporty styling made fuddy-duddy by the black plastic bits and its weird name. Sport Tourer? A 125? I?d have called it the NC125 instead. Nice Commuter.

17 abandon stricken ship, HMS Bounty, off N.C. coast

Jeff Haynes / AFP - Getty Images, file

The HMS Bounty, a replica used in the Marlon Brando movie "Munity on the Bounty", is stuck at sea as Sandy approaches. Here it sails past the Chicago skyline in July 2003.

By NBC News staff

Seventeen people aboard a replica of the HMS Bounty abandoned ship early Monday while stranded at sea off the North Carolina coast, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a press release.

"The 17 person crew donned cold water survival suits and life jackets before launching in two 25-man lifeboats with canopies,"?the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The ship?issued a distress signal late Sunday after taking on water, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The owner of the 180-foot, three mast ship -- which?was built for the 1962 Marlon Brando movie, "Mutiny on the Bounty"?--?lost communication with the crew and alerted the Coast Guard to the situation.

Story: Sandy strengthens as it bears down on eastern US?

The Coast Guard then received a distress signal from the ship showing its position. It sent out an aircraft to speak with the crew, which reported that the vessel was taking on water and had no propulsion. It's currently located about?90 miles?southeast of Hatteras, N.C.

The ship, which is still floating upright and intact,?is surrounded by 18-foot seas and 40 mph winds as Hurricane Sandy moves through the area.

The Bounty makes frequent trips around the country, offering a glimpse into maritime history, according to the ship's website. It was originally a British transport vessel, and the replica has appeared in several films, including the 2006 movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest," with Johnny Depp. Its last stop before its winter hiatus in Galveston, Texas, was to be in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Nov. 10.

It is unclear why the boat set out to sea with Sandy bearing down. Sandy could be the largest storm ever to hit the United States, according to NOAA's website.

TODAY's Al Roker reports from Point Pleasant, N.J., where water is starting to come over the dunes as Hurricane Sandy strengthens. Due to the full moon, high tides are expected to add to the storm surge, which could rise to 11 feet.

The storm strengthened overnight off the mid-Atlantic coast and is expected to bring a "life-threatening storm surge" to affected areas.

BreakingNews.com's coverage of Sandy

Maximum sustained winds of about 85 miles per hour were recorded 385 miles southeast of New York City, which forecasters warned could be hit by a wall of water up to 11 feet high.

The storm was forecast to make landfall Monday night, likely in central or southern New Jersey.

In anticipation of widespread damage and vast power outages, states of emergency were declared in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia.

CURRENT 93 Nature Unveiled music review by thellama73

4 stars For me, at least, religious horror has always been a special kind of terrifying. Films like The Omen and The Exorcist were always far more frightening than simpler tales of hook-handed serial killers or more aggressive than average sharks. The kind of existential fear that comes from the unknown and unknowable realm of gods and the afterlife, utilized so effectively by Lovecraft and his contemporaries, taps into a far deeper level of the human psyche than more the more immediate and comprehensible threats of bodily harm.

It is appropriate, then, for me to review one of Current 93's earliest efforts, a bleak and relentless patchwork of New Testament nightmares that could be described as an aural equivalent of the Book of Revelations. David Tibet, the creative force behind Current 93, has always had a fascination early Christianity and describes himself as a Gnostic, referring to the early sects of that religion that were shunned and quickly drummed out of existence by the Catholic Church in the first few centuries AD. Gnostic literature can get pretty wild, with a far greater penchant for the fantastic and otherworldly than the rest of the accepted Christian canon. Their somewhat darker outlook is perhaps understandable when one realizes that one of the central themes of Gnosticism is the idea of a wicked creator deity, the Demiurge (the Old Testament, vengeful God), who is separate from the pure and loving God of the New Testament.

With this little bit of backstory, we are at least a little more prepared for this noisy and disturbing record. A bed of sampled Gregorian chants floats eerily in the background, while discordant industrial noises clank and moan over them, punctuated by hellish growling and Tibet's strident vocals proclaiming that "Maldoror is dead" (a reference to Lautreamont's classic proto-surrealist, stream of consciousness novel that is itself quite unsettling.)

The album is broken up into two, side-long tracks, but it really sounds like a single piece of music. Tape manipulation stretches vocals out into deep bass groans. Christian themes are repeated throughout, with the title of side one referencing Golgotha, the place in which Christ was crucified. Although Nature Unveiled bears little resemblance musically to Current 93's later, folk-influenced work, thematically there is much in common, and the listener is always left feeling that the Apocalypse is just around the corner.

Towards the end of the album, the vocals fade away and are replaced by distant wailing and increasingly urgent sirens, a harbinger of imminent and inescapable doom. Then, suddenly, it's all over, the vision of the end of days complete.

Nature unveiled is a raw, powerful and extremely noisy record, and although Tibet and most of his collaborators drifted away from and ultimately rejected the "industrial" label, there is no doubt that this album remains one of the best and most effective examples of what industrial music was all about in the early eighties. Still, it will probably leave most people desperate to turn on all the lights and put on something a little more cheerful.

Russian anti-Putin opposition leader charged with plotting riots

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian investigators on Friday charged protest leader Sergei Udaltsov with plotting riots, in a case that has raised alarm among rights activists and Western governments.

The Federal Investigative Committee formally charged Udaltsov in morning questioning, after a pro-Kremlin TV channel broadcast footage from a hidden camera which it said showed him conspiring with a Georgian politician.

Udaltsov faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted in the case, which he and other Kremlin critics say is part of a tightening clampdown on dissent since Vladimir Putin started a fresh six-year presidential term in May amid a wave of protests.

Unlike two lesser-known activists charged in the same case, Udaltsov was not detained but has been ordered to remain in Moscow pending further investigation and possible trial.

One of the two, Leonid Razvozzhayev, said he was abducted in Ukraine last week and tortured. He has formally retracted his confession, his lawyer Mark Feigin said on Thursday.

Several people gathered outside the Investigative Committee building in Moscow to support Udaltsov. One held a banner reading: "I demand an end to repression and torture".

On arrival at the Investigative Committee building for questioning, the shaven-headed Udaltsov raised clenched fists.

"I'm not guilty of anything, I hold my head high," he said.

Udaltsov was among the leaders of a series of protests prompted by allegations of fraud in a December 2011 parliamentary election won by Putin's ruling United Russia party.

Putin, in power since 2000, won a new term in March. Opponents say he has used legislation and criminal cases to curb opposition.

Slaughterhouse-Five (1972): Self Respect and Survival

The clip self respect and survival from Slaughterhouse-Five (1972) where'd you get all this ? red cross. Clerical error. They've been sending us 500 Parcels a month instead of 50. Three years now. We've Got rather a lot, actually. Shouldn't you tell 'em ? Shouldn't you Give it back ? Oh, yank. You haven't been In the fight very long, Have you ? Come along. I keep forgetting Wars have always been fought By children. Where did you Get this absurd garment ? They gave it to me. Who ? The Germans. They didn't give you a coat, Yank, they gave you an insult. Hey, son. Over here. Do you understand What I?m saying ? Jerry tried To humiliate you. Now you must wear that coat As if you were proud of it. Teach him a lesson. It's terribly important That you understand that. It's been almost four years Since I was taken prisoner. True, most of us here. We haven't seen a woman Or a child in all of that time. Think about that for a minute. Want to know How we survived ? Well, I?ll tell you. The day that I was captured, I made a promise to myself: Each day I would Brush my teeth, shave my beard, Wash my hands and face Before each meal, evacuate My bowels with regularity. And do you know why ? Because the war consists of Continual petty humiliations. And I for one was going To treat myself with a good deal Of self-respect and survive. Do you think You can do it ?

Baby Mama (2008): Embarecing Her Self

The clip embarecing her self from Baby Mama (2008) with Will Forte Hi, Scott. Kate, my gosh, you look great! What are you doing here? I'm just clubbing. You remember my wife, Jean? Oh, yeah. Hi, Jean, how are you? How's everything? It's great. We just bought a house in Bucks County. I'm still doing stuff for Doctors Without Borders. Recently, we took in some Hurricane Katrina dogs. And I was in a bicycle accident that made my penis bigger. How are you? I'm doing awesome. I've just been working a lot, and I cannot have babies, it turns out. So, good job picking this one. What it is, actually, is my uterus is T-shaped, which is like... So, but actually, funny story. See that... Okay, see that little blonde woman, over here? I am paying her to have... Hi. Stop talking now. Bye, Jean.

The Wedding Date (2005): Self Examination

The Wedding Date (2005): Self Examination

The clip self examination from The Wedding Date (2005) with Jack Davenport, Dermot Mulroney I trust you've enjoyed your trip to England. Yeah, it was fantastic. Thanks, Eddie. You know, I felt sorry for you last night. I was just sitting there like some smug arse, thinking, "Aren't I a lucky sod?" I forgave her when I thought it was just some random bloke. But not Jeffrey. I've had her up on a pedestal ever since... ever since I put her up there. What a mess I've made, huh? I'm so sorry. The hardest thing's loving someone and then having the courage to let them love you back. But if you know her shit and she knows yours and at the end of the day, you still would rather give up than try... nothing's ever gonna be worth it. Maybe think about it this way. You go back, you get to spend the rest of your life having really great makeup sex.

The Hurricane (1999): Being Self-made Man

The clip being self-made man from The Hurricane (1999) Thank you. It came to me as kind of a revelation that my own freedom... lay in not wanting or needing anything of which they could deprive me. If punishment consisted of being locked in your cell... then by simply choosing to never leave my cell... I deprived them of that weapon. I would not work in their shops. I would not eat their food. I began to study. I dissected my entire case piece by piece... beginning with my initial arrest through the trial itself... and finally to the awful verdict.

Friedman's Theory of Differentiated Leadership Made Simple

Friedman's Theory of Differentiated Leadership Made Simple

http://www.onlineacu.com Dr. Jonathan Camp discusses the book A Failure of Nerve by Edwin Friedman, who owes many of his ideas of leadership to Murray Bowen (1913-1990), a pioneer of family therapy. Central to Bowen's family systems theory is the concept of differentiation, or the ability of a person to maintain a strong sense of "self" within the family. The anxious family system is composed of emotional triangles, in which two conflicting members try to diffuse the anxiety between them by bringing in a third member. But this only heightens the anxiety of the system. A well-differentiated person is able to resist the lure of emotional triangles, which causes the family system to mature by influencing others to take responsibility for themselves. In A Failure of Nerve, Friedman applies Bowen's family systems theory to organizational leadership.

Another run with a close up of the boat in the beginning. Moved the battery to the front for more prop lift to not kill the engine :D Not a to long run, because it was getting darker and 30seconds later it was raining :D Batteries are getting old and bit worser (bout 5years old now and use frequently in my RC car). Haven't had time due to exams to put the electronic parts in a safe place, but waiting for another boat to arrive later.

    MOON: Movie Trailer

    MOON: Movie Trailer

It is the near future. Astronaut Sam Bell is living on the far side of the moon, completing a three-year contract with Lunar Industries to mine Earth?s primary source of energy, Helium-3. It is a lonely job, made harder by a broken satellite that allows no live communications home. Taped messages are all Sam can send and receive. Thankfully, his time on the moon is nearly over, and Sam will be reunited with his wife, Tess, and their three-year-old daughter, Eve, in only a few short weeks. Finally, he will leave the isolation of ?Sarang,? the moon base that has been his home for so long, and he will finally have someone to talk to beyond ?Gerty,? the base?s well-intentioned, but rather uncomplicated computer. Suddenly, Sam?s health starts to deteriorate. Painful headaches, hallucinations and a lack of focus lead to an almost fatal accident on a routine drive on the moon in a lunar rover. While recuperating back at the base (with no memory of how he got there), Sam meets a younger, angrier version of himself, who claims to be there to fulfill the same three year contract Sam started all those years ago. Confined with what appears to be a clone of his earlier self, and with a ?support crew? on its way to help put the base back into productive order, Sam is fighting the clock to discover what?s going on and where he fits into company plans.

Leveled Cam Holder for Self Recording

Leveled Cam Holder for Self Recording

I needed to record myself from a distance with a videocamera. At the same time I needed to move the camera around me (and with me when I'm moving). Not just to have a static shots from the tripod. So I invented for myself this camera holder. I used a common stuff from a casual hardware store. It cost me only few bucks. Hope you consider it to be helpful for you too.
