The psychology of the left-turn lane: How human behavior influences traffic patterns

The psychology of the left-turn lane: How human behavior influences traffic patterns [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 20-Apr-2012

The Federal Highway Administration is funding a $1.2 million traffic analysis research program headed by University of Arizona civil engineering associate professor Yi-Chang Chiu

University of Arizona traffic engineer Yi-Chang Chiu has embarked on a three-year traffic modeling research project to replace the 1950s model still used to forecast current transportation needs.

Chiu's new model incorporates individual human behavior traits into traffic modeling on a day-by-day basis, which will allow him and his team to forecast the evolution of behavior with a transportation system over a long period.

The project is known as VASTO, which comes from its full title, Evolutionary Agent System for Transportation Outlook.

"The deficiency in past practices basically lies in the inability to describe human behavior in a realistic manner," said Chiu, who also is director of the DynusT Lab at the UA College of Engineering. "In our past predictions, we treated everybody pretty much the same."

Previous models predicted population movement more on a macro level, Chiu said. "We simulate individuals."

The human behavior element will be derived from census data and metropolitan planning organization travel surveys. This will incorporate the range of human whims with driving decisions, such as stopping at the store or suddenly deciding to go straight if too many cars are in the left-turn lane. VASTO simulates habitual patterns with real-time reactions.

This proposed VASTO modeling system marks the first time that individual human behavior is at the heart of traffic modeling rather than relying on past traffic trends and extrapolating them.

Chiu's ambition for VASTO is to give transportation planners a robust behavior based tool to find alternative ways to provide adequate transportation without necessarily just adding more lanes or building more roads.

"Most cities keep on building to meet peak congestion hours," Chiu said. He wants to determine whether we achieve more by building less, or by not building at all. "In the past we did not understand the mechanics of behavior so we didn't know how to manage data," he said.

The overall goal of the project is to completely change the approach to traffic management. Chiu wants to know: "If I don't build it, is there another way to manage and influence behavior? That way we can better utilize existing infrastructure."

This planning tool will allow planners to see what would happen if, for example, traffic was rerouted because of bridge construction, or if construction of a cross-town freeway was proposed, or a regional shopping center.

"You can perform what-if analyses," Chiu said. "We have not been able to do this in the past because the computer has not been fast enough to run a model in a reasonable amount of time."

The size of the $1.2 million FHWA grant is an indicator of the significance of Chiu's VASTO research. "In transportation, this is a top-of-the-line grant size," he said. "For a single project, that's very large."

VASTO will ultimately be a free, open-source technology, although users will require extensive training.

###

Chiu's research partners at the UA are Young-Jun Son and Larry Head in the systems and industrial engineering; Mark Hickman in the civil engineering and engineering mechanics department; and Sandi Rosenbloom in the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Jyh-Ming Lien of the computer science department at George Mason University also is a research team member.

Roseanne Barr on Ann Romney: A Clueless Liar!

Comedian slash sort-of presidential candidate Roseanne Barr is laying into Mitt Romney's wife, Ann, over her recent remark that being a mom was her full-time job.

It's not that Barr supports Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen's comment (and subsequent apology) criticizing Ann for having "never worked a day in her life."

It's just that Ann's claim of raising five kids on her own is BS, Roseanne says.

Ann Romney ImageRoseanne's Nuts

"Mrs. Mitt Romney claims to have worked her toned ass off, raising five Romney males all on her own, as privileged wives often do ... but, no, Ann, I call bulls--t on your Big Mama story, girlfriend," Barr wrote in a column for The Daily Beast.

Barr went on criticizing Romney for claiming she did it all solo, with the exception of a little assistance from a maid who would come in a couple of hours a week.

Roseanne writes that Ann is basically full of it:

"Of course Mrs. Mitt Romney [doesn't know] the name of the 'cleaning lady,' because like 99 percent of rich people, they are oblivious to those women who do work outside the home, even when they work inside the home of the Romney family."

"I say let's find that 'cleaning lady' (if she is even documented) and ask HER how many hours she worked per week over the years," concluded Barr.

There you go. It's not exactly Ted Nugent going off on Barack Obama, but this is certainly a fiery, unexpected and one-sided celebrity political feud.

After Mila Kunis was spotted hanging with her former "That '70s Show" co-star Ashton Kutcher several times over the weekend, the rumor mill began to spin that the one-time onscreen couple began dating in real life.

Well, her rep is addressing the rumors and shutting them down. "They've been friends for years, and they had dinner with a bunch of friends," the rep told Celebuzz. "They're not dating."

The rep continued to Usmagazine.com that there's "definitely nothing going on there" and that "three other people" were with the twosome when they went out to dinner.

According to People.com, those other friends included "70s" co-stars Wilmer Valderrama and Laura Prepon. The former castmates will all be on hand this Sunday during Fox's 25th Anniversary special.

The friends without benefits were spotted furniture shopping and chowing down at a sushi joint for dinner in Studio City, California, over the weekend. They also were seen later hanging out at his L.A.-area bachelor pad. Adding fuel to the dating-rumor fire was the fact that Kunis tried to hide from photogs by riding in the backseat of his car.

"Ashton was touching Mila's hand, and Mila was all dressed up," observed an X17 Online photographer who saw Kutcher and Kunis at the Japanese restaurant Asanebo.

Whether or not the "Two and a Half Men" star is dating Kunis, it seems his dance card has been quite full lately. Kutcher's also been romantically linked to Rihanna, who later denied anything was happening between them, telling reporters, "I'm happy, and I'm single."

Braven Six Series speakers offer Bluetooth audio, wired charging

Image

When is a wireless speaker not a wireless speaker? When you can also plug your phone into the speaker to charge it up in a pinch. That's the hook with Braven's new Six Series speakers, anyway, which come in three different varieties that each pack a USB port that lets you either charge your smartphone or daisy chain multiple speakers together. Ranging in price from $150 to $190, the three different models all also boast similar features across the board, but differ in construction, with the top-end 625s offering a rugged housing (not to mention a built-in LED flashlight), while the 600 and 650 each sport an all-aluminum design -- battery life also varies a bit by model. If the speakers look a little familiar, it's because Braven is the company formerly known as Spar, which offered some similar speakers under the Zephyr name. Hit the source link below for a closer look at each model.

Why Startups Should Pay Attention To Skyrocketing Patent Prices

US-PatentTrademarkOffice-SealAs large companies increasingly look to protect their revenue streams through IP risk mitigation, startups with strong patent holdings will become increasingly valuable because they provide an opportunity to remove dual potential threats to the potential acquirer?s revenue stream -- as a competitor and as a patent threat. Startups that are able to position themselves as part of an acquirer?s IP risk mitigation strategy make themselves more attractive targets for acquisition. For example, Twitter acquired Tweetie days after Tweetie filed for a patent application on the pull down to refresh feature and Google recently acquired Apture and Katango, two small startups with multiple pending patent applications relevant to Google?s businesses. Although some have described these deals as talent acquisitions, the value presented by the associated IP to the acquirer should not be ignored.
