Vikings Reach NFL Playoffs: Adrian Peterson Powers Minnesota Past Packers

MINNEAPOLIS ? Adrian Peterson picked up the Minnesota Vikings and gave them a thrilling ride to the playoffs, where the next stop on this improbable journey is, yes, Green Bay.

This game was so full of action, intrigue and tension they're going to stage it again next weekend.

Peterson finished 9 yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record, but he still powered the Vikings past the Packers 37-34 Sunday with 199 yards to set up a rematch at Lambeau Field in a first-round playoff game.

"I told myself to come into this game focused on one thing, and that's winning," Peterson said.

Peterson rumbled around the left side of the line for a 27-yard gain in the closing seconds, his career-high 34th carry exactly one year after reconstructive surgery on his left knee. That set up Blair Walsh's 29-yard field goal as time expired and put the Vikings (10-6) in the postseason after consecutive last-place finishes.

"For our guys to be as resilient as they were, it has you swelling with pride," coach Leslie Frazier said.

The division champion Packers (11-5) dropped to the NFC's No. 3 seed. Their five-game winning streak against the Vikings ended.

"I had a feeling that we had the game in the bag the whole game," Vikings cornerback Chris Cook said. "It was just a vibe that I had on the sideline, in how we were carrying ourselves."

Aaron Rodgers completed 28 of 40 passes for 365 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions, connecting with Jordy Nelson from 2 yards to tie the game with 2:54 remaining. But Christian Ponder threw for three scores, including one to Peterson.

Ponder went 16 for 28 for 234 yards, including a 65-yard zinger in stride to Jarius Wright midway through the fourth quarter that set up Ponder's third touchdown toss.

"It's disappointing. A lot of us wanted that extra week," Rodgers said.

Peterson finished with 2,097 yards, becoming the seventh player in NFL history to reach the 2,000 mark. He had to work for it, pulling out all the cutbacks, stutter-steps and spins he could find in his exceptional skill set. His longest run was only 28 yards against a defense geared to slow him down, and the first contact often came at, near or behind the line of scrimmage.

"It wasn't meant to happen, or it would've happened. Not to say it doesn't hurt, because it does," Peterson said of Dickerson's 28-year-old record. "But we came in here tonight and accomplished the ultimate goal, and that was getting a win and punching our ticket to the playoffs."

The Packers cut the lead to 27-24 late in the third quarter on a touchdown reception by James Jones. The on-field ruling was a fumble at the goal line, triggering an automatic review. Because the Packers threw the challenge flag after the replay process began, however, they were only penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, not prevented from benefiting from the overturned call. That's what happened to Detroit infamously on Thanksgiving, when a disputed score by Houston was prevented from review.

After posting a 9-23 record over the last two years, the Vikings made so many strides in 2012 that the season was already a success. But no NFL team would ever be satisfied by finishing in defeat against a division rival, and the emotion and energy behind the quest was palpable all afternoon.

"It took us a little while to adjust to the crowd noise, and we didn't get going," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "That usually happens up here. This is a tough place to play, no doubt. We anticipated this being the loudest environment of the year. They pumped it in here pretty good today."

The NFC North was sewn up by the Packers two weeks earlier. Even though the bye remained in the balance the top seed didn't do the Packers any good last season. They went 15-1 and lost their opener at home to the eventual champion Giants.

Rodgers played without injured leading receiver Randall Cobb, so Greg Jennings was the main guy, grabbing eight passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. But the Vikings sacked Rodgers five times, recovering a fumble on one of them at midfield to set up a third-quarter touchdown.

Rodgers has 24 touchdowns, only four interceptions and a 70 percent completion rate over 10 career starts against the Vikings. His poise, arm strength and savvy came through clear against them as much as any other team. Plus, cornerback Antoine Winfield's aggravated hand injury kept him on the sideline for most of the game.

Just as Ponder capably complemented Peterson, DuJuan Harris came out of nowhere to provide Rodgers some help. Green Bay has been proving lately it's not a one-sided offense, either, and Harris rushed 14 times for 70 yards

But this was Peterson's show. Second-and-27? He surged off right tackle and bounced outside for 28 yards on a drive that ended with his second touchdown, a 2-yard reception that pushed the lead to 27-17 in the third quarter. The "MVP" chants from the crowd rang out in earnest after that.

NOTES: Cobb's absence meant the Packers went without a 1,000-yard receiver for the first time since 2003. Cobb finished with 954 yards. ... Vikings WR Jerome Simpson was woozy after an end-zone collision in the third quarter, falling back down after trying to get up the first time. He passed concussion tests and returned to the game.

HP Equipment Was Almost Sold To Iran - Business Insider

(Reuters) - A major Iranian partner of Huawei Technologies offered to sell at least 1.3 million euros worth of embargoed Hewlett-Packard computer equipment to Iran's largest mobile-phone operator in late 2010, documents show.

China's Huawei, the world's second largest telecommunications equipment maker, says neither it nor its partner, a private company registered in Hong Kong, ultimately provided the HP products to the telecom, Mobile Telecommunication Co of Iran, known as MCI. Nevertheless, the incident provides new evidence of how Chinese companies have been willing to help Iran evade trade sanctions.

The proposed deal also raises new questions about Shenzhen-based Huawei, which recently was criticized by the U.S. House Intelligence Committee for failing to "provide evidence to support its claims that it complies with all international sanctions or U.S. export laws."

At least 13 pages of the proposal to MCI, which involved expanding its subscriber billing system, were marked "Huawei confidential" and carried the company's logo, according to documents seen by Reuters. In a statement to Reuters, Huawei called it a "bidding document" and said one of its "major local partners," Skycom Tech Co Ltd, had submitted it to MCI.

The statement went on to say, "Huawei's business in Iran is in full compliance with all applicable laws and regulations including those of the U.N., U.S. and E.U. This commitment has been carried out and followed strictly by our company. Further, we also require our partners to follow the same commitment and strictly abide by the relevant laws and regulations."

In October, Reuters reported that another Iranian partner of Huawei last year tried to sell embargoed American antenna equipment to Iran's second largest mobile operator, MTN Irancell, in a deal the buyer ultimately rejected. The U.S. antenna manufacturer, CommScope Inc, has an agreement with Huawei in which the Chinese firm can use its products in Huawei systems, according to a CommScope spokesman. He added that his company strives to comply fully with all U.S. laws and sanctions.

Huawei has a similar partnership with HP. In a statement, the Palo Alto, Calif., company said, "HP has an extensive control system in place to ensure our partners and resellers comply with all legal and regulatory requirements involving system security, global trade and customer privacy and the company's relationship with Huawei is no different."

The statement added, "HP's distribution contract terms prohibit the sale of HP products into Iran and require compliance with U.S. and other applicable export laws."

Washington has banned the export of computer equipment to Iran for years. The sanctions are designed to deter Iran from developing nuclear weapons; Iran says its nuclear program is aimed purely at producing domestic energy.

CLOSE LINKS

Huawei and its Iranian partner, Skycom, appear to have very close ties.

An Iranian job recruitment site called Irantalent.com describes Skycom as "a leading telecom solution provider" and goes on to list details that are identical to the way Huawei describes itself on its U.S. website: employee-owned, selling "solutions" used by "45 of the world's top 50 telecom operators" and serving "one-third of the world's population."

On LinkedIn.com, several telecom workers list having worked at "Huawei-skycom" on their resumes. A former Skycom employee said the two companies shared the same headquarters in China. And an Iranian telecom manager who has visited Skycom's office in Tehran said, "Everybody carries Huawei badges."

A Hong Kong accountant whose firm is listed in Skycom registration records as its corporate secretary said Friday he would check with the company to see if anyone would answer questions. Reuters did not hear back.

The proposal to MCI, dated October 2010, would have doubled the capacity of MCI's billing system for prepaid customers. The proposal noted that MCI was "growing fast" and that its current system, provided by Huawei, had "exceeded the system capacity" to handle 20 million prepaid subscribers.

"In order to keep serving (MCI) with high quality, we provide this expansion proposal to support 40M subscribers," the proposal states on a page marked "HUAWEI Confidential."

The proposal makes clear that HP computer servers were an integral part of the "Hardware Installation Design" of the expansion project. Tables listing equipment for MCI facilities at a new site in Tehran and in the city of Shiraz repeatedly reference HP servers under the heading, "Minicomputer Model."

The documents seen by Reuters also include a portion of an equipment price list that carries Huawei's logo and are stamped "SKYCOM IRAN OFFICE." The pages list prices for HP servers, disk arrays and switches, including those that already are "existing" and others that need to be added. The total proposed project price came to 19.9 million euros, including a "one time special discount."

The proposed new HP equipment, which totaled 1.3 million euros, included one server, 20 disk arrays, 22 switches and software. The existing HP equipment included 22 servers, 8 disk arrays and 13 switches, with accompanying prices.

Asked who had provided the existing HP equipment to MCI, Vic Guyang, a Huawei spokesman, said it wasn't Huawei. "We would like to add that the existing hardware equipment belongs to the customer. Huawei does not have information on, or the authority to check the source of the customer's equipment."

Officials with MCI did not respond to requests for comment.

In a series of stories this year, Reuters has documented how China has become a backdoor for Iran to obtain embargoed U.S. computer equipment. In March and April, Reuters reported that China's ZTE Corp, a Huawei competitor, had sold or agreed to sell millions of dollars worth of U.S. computer gear, including HP equipment, to Telecommunication Co of Iran, the country's largest telecommunications firm, and a unit of the consortium that controls TCI.

The articles sparked investigations by the U.S. Commerce Department, the Justice Department and some of the U.S. tech companies. ZTE says it is cooperating with the federal probes.

TCI is the parent company of MCI.

Fujitsu moans that Windows 8 is killing PC sales -

Fujitsu said the company will miss its annual shipment target for personal computers and it is blaming the fact that Windows 8 is not selling.

Fujitsu President Masami Yamamoto, 58, told reporters in Tokyo that interest in the software was weak.

He said that sales of devices running Windows fell 21 per cent from a year earlier in the four weeks after Microsoft released Windows 8 on October 26. The decrease has been fuelled by a 24 per cent drop in sales of notebook computers.

"Fujitsu doesn't plan to join its competitors that are discounting" to sustain sales, Yamamoto said. The company needs to strengthen its services in overseas markets, shifting from a product-focused approach.

But the announcement means that hopes that the release of Windows 8 helping PC sales to grow have proven groundless. Traditionally the release of new version of Windows has resulted in a boom in hardware. This is because the new software would require better hardware to run.

However with the last two versions of Windows that has not been the case. The software runs on more or less the same spec as the old hardware.

This means that people do not need a better computer to run Windows 8. In fact many of them can run it nicely on their old machines and squeeze out another few years of life.

To make matters worse for hardware makers, Windows 8 is more efficient at using hardware than Windows 7. It actually improves the older machine. If you bought a Windows 7 machine, all you need to do to make it better is move to Windows 8.

Does this mean that Windows 8 is a success? No, it most certainly doesn't. But it does mean that we should be looking a little askance at those claiming that sluggish hardware sales are as a result of a Windows 8 failure. This time really is different for Microsoft: you don't have to buy new kit in order to be able to run the software. Thus the success or not of Windows 8 just isn't going to be reflected in hardware sales in the same way as previous releases of the OS.?

Va. Tech edges Rutgers in OT in Russell Bowl

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? After one of its most unfulfilling seasons in recent memory, Virginia Tech desperately wanted to avoid its first losing season since 1992.

Mission accomplished.

Cody Journell kicked a 22-yard field goal on the first possession of overtime to help the Hokies beat Rutgers 13-10 in the Russell Athletic Bowl on Friday night.

Virginia Tech won its final three games to finish 7-6.

"Not everything in life is real smooth," Hokies coach Frank Beamer said. "These players worked hard and how they reacted to adversity and to disappointment and when all of them wanted to do better ? they kept together."

Rutgers (9-4) had a chance to tie it in overtime, but Nick Borgese missed a 42-yard field-goal attempt to the right.

The loss ended a run of five straight bowl victories for the Scarlet Knights and kept them from recording their first double-digit win season since 2006.

The win also was the Hokies' 12th straight victory over their former Big East Conference rival.

Virginia Tech trailed 10-0 at the half, then rallied in the final 30 minutes thanks to some timely turnovers and offense. Quarterback Logan Thomas struggled in the first half and finished with a pair of interceptions, but also had 192 yards passing and the game's only passing touchdown.

"I can't commend the defense more," Thomas said. "The entire season that's kind of how it's been. I have to give a shout out to (linebacker) Bruce Taylor because he played his tail off the entire game. It felt like he was in the backfield making a tackle on every play."

Taylor finished the night with a team-high 11 tackles to lead a defense that held Rutgers to 67 yards in the second half.

Virginia Tech cornerback Antone Exum, selected the most valuable player of the game, picked off Gary Nova's pass early in the fourth quarter to set up the tying score.

He said though the offense took its lumps early, he was never down on their effort.

"That's just the way the game panned out," Exum said. "We never lose hope with the guys on the other side of the ball. Our job, honestly, is just to go out there and get as many three-and-outs as possible and give the most opportunities as we can to put points on the board.

"We did a good job of that tonight."

Rutgers seemed to be in command until the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, when turnovers and a sudden surge from the Hokies' offense quickly turned the momentum.

Down 10-0, Virginia Tech took over after Rutgers missed field goal and moved into Scarlet Knights' territory for the first time in the game on a 32-yard pass from Thomas to Dyrell Roberts.

Thomas then found Corey Fuller for a 25-yard strike on the next play, before the drive stalled on the 8. It forced the Hokies to settle for Journell's 25-yard field goal.

Exum intercepted Nova's pass on the ensuing drive, giving the Hokies a first down on the Rutgers 21.

The Hokies found the end zone three plays later on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Thomas to Fuller with 10:56 left as steady rain began to fall.

"We finally caught them off balance," Thomas said. "We finally got them uncomfortable. ... I just had to put the ball out there for him."

Virginia Tech defensive end Tyrel Wilson then came up with the defense's second turnover of the night, recovering a fumble inside the Scarlet Knights 40 after Nova dropped a snap while lined up in the shotgun.

An intentional grounding penalty on Thomas forced a punt, though, with less than 7 minutes to play.

They got another chance a few series later, only to see Journell's 51-yard field goal come up short with 2:20 showing on the clock.

Rutgers punted, but got it back just a play later when Thomas' pass was intercepted by Brandon Jones.

"Two tremendous defensive performances, and one of the better defensive performances I've seen from Rutgers players this season," Rutgers coach Kyle Flood said. "It's unfortunate that we came out on the wrong side of the game, and squander that kind of performance as a result."

It was defense on both sides that controlled the action in the first half as Rutgers took a 10-0 halftime lead.

The Scarlet Knights were the most effective offensively, managing a modest seven first downs and a field goal. But the Scarlet Knights came up empty on their best drive of the half, failing to convert on a fourth down pass play inside the Hokies 35.

Virginia Tech struggled throughout, though, tallying only 73 yards total in the first two quarters. Thomas was also sacked twice and intercepted late in the half, which severely hampered an offense that never made it into Rutgers' territory.

Penalties also bent in Rutgers' favor. Virginia Tech was penalized eight times for 60 yards. The Scarlet Knights weren't whistled for any penalties in the half.

A miscue by Virginia Tech on the opening drive of the game produced the game's first score.

Hokies center Caleb Farris sent his second snap of the night sailing past Thomas and into the end zone.

Thomas scrambled back to pick it up, and tried to run it out, but he was instantly swarmed and lost the ball as he was tackled. It was eventually recovered by Rutgers linebacker Khaseem Greene for the touchdown.

Beamer said the challenge to not any shortcomings from this season cloud the offseason.

"I couldn't be more proud of this team," he said. "We've won some more games in other years, but I think this group is special."

Notes: The game was the lowest scoring the bowl's history. It surpassed Stanford's 24-3 win over Penn State in 1993. ...The game also set a bowl record with 20 punts, passing the previous record of 19 in the 1991 matchup between Alabama and Colorado.

Ash, Texas rally to stun No. 15 Oregon State

By PAUL J. WEBER
AP Sports Writer

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - David Ash wasn't sure he would start the Alamo Bowl. No one will remember after the way he finished Texas' rocky season with a validating and dazzling victory.

The sophomore threw a 36-yard touchdown strike to Marquise Goodwin with 2:24 left for the last of two fourth-quarter touchdown passes, stunning No. 15 Oregon State and lifting the Longhorns to a 31-27 comeback victory Saturday night.

The Longhorns (9-4) never led before Goodwin scored his second touchdown on a deep post pattern, just a down after Texas converted a fourth-and-1 play to keep its chances alive.

"I guess in in every situation you have to be thankful," said Ash, who was pulled in a loss to TCU a month ago and wasn't immediately selected the starter for the Alamo Bowl. "I learned a lot at TCU. It was a tough situation I was in. I was just really thankful I got another opportunity to play a game I love."

With Texas down 20-10 at halftime, Longhorns coach Mack Brown said he told his players they would win.

"I told them this it wasn't going to be easy, but I told them this game was ours and we would win it," Brown said. "This one is really special."

Storm Woods ran for 118 yards and scored two touchdowns for the Beavers (9-4), who left stunned after looking as though they would wrap up their first 10-win season since 2006.

"Not to take anything away from Texas, that was a great team offensively and defensively," Wood said. "In the first half we had a great style of football. In the second half, Texas made some adjustments and I guess, they just wanted it more."

The victory was a dose of much-needed good news for Texas after coming into the game under a cloud of questions following the suspensions of backup quarterback Case McCoy and injured linebacker Jordan Hicks.

Ash, whose been pulled at times for McCoy this season, was 21 of 33 for 241 yards. Ash sputtered until the fourth quarter, when he went 9 for 11 for 146 yards. Even if there were doubts about Ash before then, Texas had no choice but to stick with him: the only backups were two redshirt freshmen who haven't taken a snap all season.

Brown announced the suspensions Friday but wouldn't reveal which players were sent home. A person with knowledge of the suspensions told The Associated Press the players were McCoy and Hicks, speaking on condition of anonymity because Texas wasn't releasing the names.

Brown addressed the suspensions during a previously schedule news conference and referred to a local TV report that police were investigating two unidentified Texas players in an alleged sexual assault at a San Antonio hotel. Police released a heavily redacted incident report that only identifies the suspects as two students, one 20 and the other 21.

Authorities are still investigating and no charges have been filed.

Brown said he would not address the suspensions further.

Oregon State quarterback Cody Vaz was 15 of 28 for 194 yards and two interceptions. The Beavers had negative 4 yards in the fourth quarter as they were muffled by the Longhorns defense that was led by Alex Okafor, who finished with 4 1/2 sacks.

"When we tried to just drop back and pass, it was difficult," Oregon State coach Mike Riley said. "That's why Cody had to just hang in there. It was very, very tough. He made some plays and some other plays didn't develop because he didn't just have time."

Although Goodwin's touchdown catch might have won the game, two spectacular Texas plays in an earlier 83-yard scoring drive handed the Longhorns momentum - and a chance.

First was wide receiver Jaxon Shipley rescuing a pass sailing behind him with a dazzling one-handed grab at midfield. Ash made up for that off-target throw six plays later, slithering out of safety Anthony Watkins' near-certain sack and flinging the ball to Johnathan Gray, who then zipped down the sideline for a 15-yard scoring play that got the Longhorns to 27-24

The Longhorns played for a national championship in 2009. What's followed has been the shakiest of Brown's 15 years at Texas: a combined 22-16 record, an overhaul of assistant coaches and stubborn instability at quarterback following seven spoiled years with Heisman Trophy finalists Colt McCoy - the suspended player's brother - and Vince Young under center.

A surge of four consecutive victories late this season put this nine-win season in reach - a benchmark that had been the ho-hum standard of the Brown era. It comes following an unexpected twist earlier this month, when school President Bill Powers went to his blog to write that Brown had his "full support" and would remain the head coach.

Powers cited an increase an "increase in media speculation" about Brown's future. It was published on his blog the same day Brown would not yet commit to Ash or Case McCoy as his starting quarterback for the Alamo Bowl.

Spanish police arrest 17 suspected pimps

MADRID (AP) ? Spain's Interior Ministry says police have arrested 17 people on suspicion of smuggling Nigerian women into Spain and forcing them into prostitution using threats including claims they would cast Voodoo spells on them if they didn't comply.

An investigation began when police detected in January that around 10 women had been brought into the country illegally using a small boat.

Police said that following an investigation its raids seized computer equipment, mobile phones, false identity and work permit documents, as well as objects which detectives said were allegedly used in "Voodoo rituals."

Officers tracked down the suspected pimps in cities throughout Spain and arrested 16 Nigerian nationals and one Ugandan citizen, a statement released Sunday said. It was not clear when the arrests took place.

Families in limbo as Russia bans U.S. adoptions | russian, limbo ...

A Russian parliamentary resolution has left hundreds of American families and thousands of children in limbo after it proposed an indefinite ban on American adoptions of Russian orphans.

Seven weeks into a ground-breaking diplomatic agreement designed to regulate the adoption of Russian orphans, the parliament?s ban is seen by politicians and adoption communities as a major set-back and a potentially treaty-violating move by the Russian government. It bans American adoptions of some of Russia?s 750,000 orphans, many of whom are considered ?special needs? and require support not available in Russia, adoption agencies say. President Vladimir Putin signed the bill into law Friday, and it goes into affect Tuesday. American adoption agencies are waiting to see if hundreds of pending adoptions, some mere days from being finalized, will go through.

Russian officials in the parliament, known as the Duma, named the bill for Dima Yakovlev, an adopted Russian boy who died in the United States of heatstroke, and whose death Russian officials allege the United States did not thoroughly investigate. But, the bill is widely perceived as punitive action against a recently passed American trade and human rights bill, known as the Magnitsky Act, that targets Russian human rights violations.

Colorado resident Jan Wondra, who lives in Centennial and has an adopted Russian daugther, said the ban has created anxiety for families and children caught in the political fray. She thinks of the bill as a political catspaw, and something that stems from nationalistic fervor and pride in the Duma.

?The Russian orphans have been turned into political pawns in the this situation,? Wondra said Friday. ?They wanted to get our attention and they did.?

Families caught

For Wondra, national vice chairman for the non-profit group Families for Russian and Ukrainian Adoption, American adoption of Russian children has long been a sensitive issue, tarnished by an increasingly complex process and the abuse of Russian children abroad.

In response to the deaths of at least 15 Russian children adopted by Americans, and further fueled by the return of a Russian boy by his adopted grandmother in 2010, the Russian government has become increasingly vigilant when it comes to foreign adoptions of its children. Today, the process requires at least three visits to Russia, Russian court appearances, and between $50,000 and $70,000 to complete. The passing of the Yakovlev Law caught many families in crucial phases of the process ? some have chosen their children, or spent money on travel and legal expenses.

?They have already met the children more than once. The children have begun to call them mama and papa,? Wondra said. ?These people consider them their children.?

There are at least 1,000 Russian orphans in the midst of an adoption, and somewhere between 50 and 100 American families who are in Russia this December on their final trip to pick up their children, Wondra said. But Putin and the Duma have not clarified some of the lingering issues for these families ? it is unknown if the Yakovlev Law will grandfather in some children whose adoptions are nearly completed. In his annual news conference last week, Putin did not elaborate on its implementation, and said he had not yet read the Duma proposal.

The political obstacles and uncertainty, coupled with lack of funding, moved the adoption agency Bethany Christian Services to cancel its Russian adoption program a couple of years ago, said Bill Blacquiere, the group?s CEO and president. But the agency, which has offices in 35 states including Colorado, has between 25 and 30 families with pending adoptions, he said.

?We don?t know what?s going to happen,? Blacquiere said Thursday. ?That?s what?s causing a lot of anxiety and some emotional trauma. We have several families, two scheduled to fly to Russia during the second week of January for their third visit to pick up their child.?

Like Blacquiere, Heidi Hendricks, vice president of Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains, is waiting to see how the Yakovlev Law will be enforced. The few Colorado families adopting children through the agency will not be as severely affected, Hendricks said on Thursday.

?We were one of the fortunate agencies,? she said. ?We had people just beginning (the process), or people who had just ended. That was just coincidental.?

But for Hendricks, the concern now is for the thousands of Russian orphans, and their futures.

?There?s over 700,000 children in orphanages. There?s no future and there?s not an access to a future with a family,? she said. ?All of those kids have minor special needs. They are fixed in a instant here, but there they are listed as special needs. Their futures are really taken away from them.?

Thousands institutionalized

Before Bethany?s Russian adoption program closed, Blacquiere spent time in the country teaching workers about foster care programs and promoting special education for orphans with physical or mental disabilities. Special surgeries, or special educational opportunities are some things that Russian children stand to gain by coming to America, Wondra said.

While Russian adoptions of their own children would be ideal, cultural and economic barriers often make that impossible, she added.

?Many of these children involved here are special needs children, and they will not be adopted in Russia. Russians will not adopt them.?

Although the country has suffered from a demographic crisis and children are highly valued ? the country has a national children?s day holiday ? the Russian attitude towards orphans is old-fashioned, Wondra says. Russians who adopt children typically seek babies, and Wondra has seen cases where women will fake pregnancies before they adopt a baby. Older children, on the other hand, ?don?t have a much of a chance there,? she said. Russia does not have an established foster care system, Wondra and Blacquiere said.

?Their children are in institutions, they have no foster care. They operate the way we did in the 1930s,? Wondra said.

Like orphans in the United States or other countries, Russian orphans are often the children of drug addicts or alcoholics, and many suffer from fetal alcohol syndrome. Others, who have been neglected, suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD. Wondra maintains that, for these children in Russia, there is little hope of a good future. Although Putin stressed at his news conference the need to improve the lot of Russian orphans, this has been a concern for years, Wondra says.

?The number of children in orphanages, 750,000 ? it hasn?t come down very much in all these years,? she said. ?They age out. They have no training, no skills. How are they supposed to live??

The thought that they have given their three Russian children a better chance at life helps Greg and Donna Patchell through the trials of raising their adopted kids, some of whom suffer from PTSD and other behavioral disorders. Twelve years ago, the Patchells tried to adopt a Bosnian orphan, but when a demographic crisis shut down the country?s orphanages, they turned to Russia. They adopted three siblings, two brothers and sister, and brought them to Colorado. They struggled to communicate in mixed Russian-English and to raise children whose medical history and genetic inclinations were unknown to them. It has been no walk in the park, Donna Patchell said on Friday, and adopting Russian orphans is a serious decision.

?We just would love parents to understand that you are doing a fantastic thing,? she said. ?It?s not a fairy tale. It can be, but a lot of times it isn?t. Their lives are lot better than they would have been. But we do not view ourselves as saviors.?

The Patchells have struggled to help their oldest son overcome drug addiction, possible affects of fetal alcohol syndrome, as well as a personality disorder they call ?reactive attachment disorder.?

But still, the ban on American adoptions of Russian children calls to mind the December day when they went to village orphanage to claim their children, the Patchells said.

?We were coming back on the second trip, and you literally brought the clothes that they wear out of the orphanage,? Greg recalled. ?We were coming in with these big bags. The other kids were outside playing in the yard ? it was December. And they?d look at you and they?d freeze, and it was hard. They look as if they are thinking, ?Are you coming for me?? You have that image frozen in our brain forever.?

Adoption issue timeline:

Nov. 1: The bilateral agreement on adoptions between Russia and the United States goes into effect.

Nov. 16: The House passes the Magnitsky bill, which eliminates cold war-era trade restrictions in Russia but also holds the country accountable for human rights violations. The bill is named for Sergei Magnitsky, an anti-corruption lawyer who died in a Russian prison in 2009.

Dec. 14: President Barack Obama signs the Magnitsky Act into law.

Dec. 19: The State Duma votes to ban the adoption of Russian children into the United States. The ban is given the unofficial title of the Dima Yakovlev Law, named for a Russian child who died of heatstroke in the United States in 2008.

Dec. 21: The State Duma in Moscow officially adopts the Dima Yakovlev Law.

Dec. 28: President Vladimir Putin signs the Dima Yakovlev Law, to go into effect on Jan. 1.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? Temple basketball fans may be disappointed for a while: tonight?s basketball game against Detroit-Mercy, at the Liacouras Center, has been postponed.

Temple officials say the Detroit team was unable to get to Philadelphia in time for the game, due to yesterday?s rain, snow, and high winds which caused the cancellation of hundreds of flights in and out of Philadelphia (see related news story).

No makeup date for the game was immediately announced, but Temple indicated it could be as soon as tomorrow, so ticketholders should watch the Temple Basketball web site for updates.

Homes evacuated as Nicaragua volcano spews ash

Some 300 families living on the flanks of the highest volcano in Nicaragua have been advised to leave after it began spewing hot gas and ash. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By Reuters

Nicaragua's tallest volcano has belched an ash cloud hundreds of feet into the sky in its latest bout of sporadic activity, prompting the evacuation of nearby residents, the government said on Wednesday.

The 5,725-foot San Cristobal volcano, which sits less than 100 miles north of the capital, Managua, in the country's northwest, has been active in recent years and went through a similar episode in September.

The latest activity began late Tuesday.

Government spokeswoman Rosario Murillo called on residents who live within a two-mile radius of the volcano to leave the area. About 300 families live near the volcano.

"We have some families who have self-evacuated. ... We ask (the people) to go to a safe place. It's just for a few days during this emergency," she said, adding that it was a precautionary measure.

A billowing grayish cloud could be seen drifting sideways from the volcano's peak.

The volcano also stirred in mid-2008, when it expelled gas and rumbled with a series of small eruptions.

Estate Planning: Not Just For the Rich - The Wiewel Law Firm

If you are like many other American families, the current upheaval in Washington regarding the fiscal cliff (and the estate and gift taxes) doesn?t particularly interest you. However, while the discussions in Washington generally only affect the extremely wealthy, don?t be fooled. You still need an estate plan for yourself and your loved ones.

No matter your net worth, it?s important to have, at the bare minimum, a basic estate plan. Such a plan ensures that your family and financial goals are met after you die and may include components such as a Will, a Durable Power of Attorney, a Living Will or Medical Power of Attorney, and possibly even a Trust.

So, now that you know you need some sort of estate planning, you may be wondering where to begin. A good place to start is taking inventory of your assets. Your assets include your investments, retirement savings, insurance policies, and real estate or business interests.

Then ask yourself three questions:? Whom do you want to inherit your assets? Whom do you want handling your financial affairs if you?re ever incapacitated? Whom do you want making medical decisions for you if you become unable to make them for yourself?

Now, be sure to consult with your estate planning attorney to ensure your estate plan is properly drafted and executed. Preparing your own estate plan is not a safe DIY project, especially when the protection of all that you have and everyone you love is at stake.?

LG's 2013 AV lineup puts NFC into Blu-ray player, 9.1-channel home theater

LG's 2013 home theater line includes NFCequipped 91channel surround system, Bluray player

LG is in the midst of a whirlwind tour of its 2013 CES introductions, and the next stop is its AV catalog. The running theme this year is NFC: both the BH9430PW 9.1-channel home theater and the BP730 Blu-ray player include the short-range wireless format to simplify mirroring content from your Optimus G (and, most likely, other NFC phones). The surround system also packs an iPod dock and a Private Audio Mode that funnels sound to a nearby smartphone when a quiet house is paramount. Beyond these two devices, LG promises the Bluetooth-equipped, 310W NB4530A sound bar, a ND8630 speaker dock with both Android and iOS support (including AirPlay and Bluetooth) and an NP6630 portable speaker that stuffs AirPlay, Bluetooth and NFC into its frame. We'll know more at CES next month, but those who want LG's overview can see it for themselves after the break.

4 Sales Reports for Successful Sales Managers | InsightSquared

Highly successful sales managers lead their teams to close more deals.? Among the key traits of successful sales managers is the desire to manage their business by the numbers, and as a result they make better decisions. Therefore, they regularly view sales reports for clear visibility into the key metrics that will help them close more.

Here are 4 reports that great sales managers get from their analysts to win big each quarter:

Bookings Trend

How are sales doing thus far this month and this quarter? Successful sales managers need to know this to identify where they stand vs. goals and whether they are falling behind. If so, they can move quickly to fix it. Success in sales management is a function of being proactive and getting ahead of any issues ? this report helps the manager see when they can coach the sales team to get over any hurdles.

Bookings Trend

Opportunity Pipeline

What opportunities need my attention right now? This is a key area that successful sales managers want to understand. Therefore they constantly look at a report by pipeline by sales reps. They also drill down by how much level of effort is spent on the opportunity ? this is measured by number of activities weighted by how much time is consumed for these activities.? This helps get a leg up on competition because the report shows which opportunities are closing soon and thus need immediate attention. Additionally, this report clarifies which opportunities could be pulled forward and closed earlier. Lastly, this report can help figure out if the team is focused on the right size of opportunities at a critical time (near the end of the month or quarter).

Activities

Sales management is about coaching the sales team, and sales success is a function of sales effort. Successful managers want to measure and improve sales efforts by tracking activities of each direct report over time. They want to be able to quickly spot who needs assistance.

Successful sales managers ask their analysts to provide a report which not only shows activities but also shows who is executing these activities by account, by employee and by opportunity. Monitoring activities by opportunity is particularly useful to see how many activities are done for early stage opportunities and how many activities for late stage opportunities.

They also their sales analysts to report key activities vs. goals ? this shows sales reps who may need real-time coaching to improve their execution.

Lead Aging

Do we have any leads that have been ignored? Successful sales managers know that 40% ? 50% of new leads are not worked for the first few days, which means that their probability of converting falls dramatically. Hence this is an area of potential upside and a report that shows lead aging for each sales rep allows successful sales managers to spot which rep should improve his or her follow-up process quickly, which will ultimately increase the conversion rate to opportunities.

Lead Aging

If you are regularly looking at these 4 sales reports and especially now in the last stretch of Q4 then you are already making better decisions heading into 2013.

Want an easier way to get these reports and more?

Make The Most Of Your Internet Marketing With These Ideas ...

The main vehicle for many businesses to market their products today is Affiliate marketing. From running up websites, to sending emails, to setting up social media accounts, today there are a huge number of ways to market your business online. Continue on to the article below for some helpful information on how to use electronic communication to help your website marketing efforts.

Look into what is most often complained about in your industry, and consider if there is an opportunity there. Why not? This is an excellent system for discovering what problems are out there that need fixing. When you have narrowed down potential solutions, you have a list of potential businesses, products or services at your finger tips. With this approach, you can find your perfect niche, and generate a mission statement to boot.

Here is some great internet marketing advice! Make sure your customers feel safe and secure while browsing your webpage. Add an explanation of your privacy policy provisions near the top of the website. Your customers will be assured that the information that they give you is safe. Your customers will be pleased that their identities were protected when they bought your product.

Try using product pages that have things like photos and videos to convince the audience that they should get your product. Doing so will ensure that your future customers are fully informed about your products before deciding to make a purchase. This shows them you want them to know as much as they can about your products, and also lets them decide whether to buy or not.

Back up your claims. People are justifiably skeptical of what they read on the Internet. Credibility is key; augment your sales pitch with support like references, customer testimonials and fact-based evidence. Claims offered on their own, lacking any sort of support, can actually hurt your business instead of help it.

One recent marketing strategy is to make a public relations style website for your company, separate from your own. This website could host content that might wind up published in print media or shared by online news sources. This easy method is a phenomenal way to publicize your business.

Have the knowledge needed to answer questions. Having good communication with your visitors and customers and offering answers to questions in a timely manner are essential parts to any business, and Web marketing is no different. Clear, concise information delivered in a friendly but professional way will show that you take your customers and your products seriously.

You do not need to be daunted by the prospect of Web marketing. Try the tips here if you want to make your online presence known by marketing to a particular customer base. A lot of consumers today prefer to be informed electronically, which makes Internet marketing an excellent way to grow a business.

HP Could Lay Off At Least 70 Autonomy Employees - Business Insider

HP plans to lay off a bunch of Autonomy employees, according to several news reports.

Up to 200 Autonomy employees are bracing themselves for a pink slip, writes Jon Rees at the U.K. publication, the Daily Mail.

The actual number of cuts could be closer to 70, reports Arik Hesseldahl from AllThingsD, naming sources close to the company.? These 70 will be mostly salespeople who were hired before HP bought Autonomy.

The layoffs were reportedly in the works before HP announced an $8.8 billion writedown of Autonomy, Hesseldahl reports.?

HP claimed that $5 billion of that writedown was due to fraud in Autonomy's books. Autonomy's founder and former CEO, Mike Lynch, has adamantly denied any wrongdoing.

Word of Autonomy-specific layoffs shouldn't be surprising. In addition to the massive write-down on the value of Autonomy, HP has been involved in a multi-year effort to shed 29,000 jobs from its payroll by the end HP's 2014 fiscal year.

HP declined comment.

An added benefit of obtaining site visitors employing this method is the fact that the visitors is most likely to be very targeted visitors, that is the only kind that matters within the finish. Whoever arrives at your internet site Haloti Ngata Jersey via this route has clicked on the link to your post and read your post. There?s no saying exactly where your articles are likely to finish up and who will likely be studying them! Your post could pique the interest of somebody who had till that moment not the slightest inclination to get whatever it?s you?re supplying. * Article directories that function much less than 1,000 authors have not hit the massive time yet and are finest avoided. Look for post directories which have over a single to five thousand authors.
* Ideally, a great write-up directory must be powered by humans and should possess the name from the owner or the individual in charge clearly visible. Absence of either among these elements indicates that the owner doesn?t want to be held accountable and that the web site is totally automated, which signifies there?s nobody policing the high quality from the content. Much better to prevent being associated with such an internet site.
* If your e-mails go unanswered for greater than 48 hours it speaks of dismal lack of service and is an indication of worse to come following you join up.
Obtaining your post published in a handful of carefully chosen write-up directories and ezines will guarantee better exposure of high quality as opposed to getting your post published in numerous sub-standard write-up directories.
