Series Preview: Anaheim Angels @ Texas Rangers - Possibilities

He doesn't even look happy to be there

You know, for all the doom and gloom surrounding our behind-the-Yankees-by-percentage-points-for-best-record-in-the-American-League Texas Rangers, in putting together the numbers for this preview, the Rangers have been, and still are, a better team than the Anaheim Angels. It's pretty shocking, I know. I thought the Angels had surely passed the Rangers by now. Turns out, it was the A's passing the Angels.

Oh sure, since June or so the Angels have been putting on a charge. But they have been doing so at a pace only barely above the level that the Rangers have been playing since then. And you know why? The Angels are a good baseball team. It hurts to type those words, but it's true. We knew they were going to be good and they are. The A's? Well that's just weird.

I don't think these Angels are better than the Rangers. Not with Zack Greinke. Not with Vernon Wells. Not with Mike Trout. Not yet. Probably not for the rest of 2012. Five game leads in exceptionally late July are a pretty big deal. Maybe they eventually do overtake the Rangers, though. A five game lead is a great thing to have, but it's not an impossibility that the Angels continue to tick upward enough while the Rangers somehow extend their recent stalling out for an extended period of time.

But the other thing we should know by now is the Rangers are a good baseball team. I wouldn't count on the Rangers to continue going 1-31 with in RISP situations forever. I wouldn't count on Josh Hamilton to continue hitting basically like a 150 lbs shortstop forever. I wouldn't count on a sigh of relief coming from seeing Craig Gentry is up at the plate instead of Nelson Cruz, Mike Napoli, or Ian Kinsler forever. And who knows, maybe we shouldn't count out having some reinforcements in the next 24 hours or so.

I had come to terms with the notion that the Rangers were likely going to stand pat at this deadline after missing out on Cole Hamels and Grienke. Let's just say some recent rumors have altered my deadline expectations. Perhaps to my own detriment, but so be it.

I'm too distracted by Cliff Lee rumors to really finish any of these thoughts. Maybe that says a lot about my level of concern regarding the Angels. Anyhow, here's basically all you need to know:

  • Angels sweep - The Rangers lead the Angels in the AL West by 1.0 games
  • Angels win 3 of 4 - The Rangers lead the Angels in the AL West by 3.0 games
  • Series 2-2 split - The Rangers lead the Angels in the AL West by 5.0 games
  • Rangers win 3 of 4 - The Rangers lead the Angels in the AL West by 7.0 games
  • Rangers sweep - The Rangers lead the Angels in the AL West by 9.0 games

Tuesday, July 31 7:05: RHP Jered Weaver vs. LHP Derek Holland

Wednesday, August 1 7:05: RHP Dan Haren vs. RHP Yu Darvish

Thursday, August 2 7:05: LHP C.J. Wilson vs. LHP Matt Harrison

Star-divide

Here's a breakdown of the pitching match-ups against the third place Anaheim Angels:

  • Roy Oswalt: 3-1, 7.67 K/9, 1.84 BB/9, .406 BABIP, 69.8% LOB, 3.85 FIP, 3.73 xFIP, 0.6 WAR - Last three starts: 11 runs allowed in 16.2 innings
  • Ervin Santana: 4-10, 6.08 K/9, 3.57 BB/9, .270 BABIP, 65.5% LOB, 5.37 FIP, 4.58 xFIP, -0.5 WAR - Last three starts: 16 runs allowed in 9.0 innings

Advantage: Roy Oswalt's bad back but vaguely promising peripherals over Ervin Santana and the 15-out Pitch Limit.

  • Derek Holland: 7-5, 7.01 K/9, 2.84 BB/9, .265 BABIP, 67.6% LOB, 4.68 FIP, 4.30 xFIP, 0.9 WAR - Last three starts: 9 runs allowed in 22.0 innings
  • Jered Weaver: 13-1, 6.93 K/9, 2.02 BB/9, .232 BABIP, 81.8% LOB, 3.40 FIP, 3.99 xFIP, 2.5 WAR - Last three starts: 7 runs allowed in 19.0 innings

Advantage: I assume that Jered Weaver will win every game he pitches over Derek Holland looked pretty good last time out.

  • Yu Darvish: 11-7, 10.15 K/9, 4.71 BB/9, .301 BABIP, 72.7% LOB, 3.77 FIP, 3.81 xFIP, 2.5 WAR - Last three starts: 14 runs allowed in 19.2 innings
  • Dan Haren: 8-8, 7.39 K/9, 2.18 BB/9, .315 BABIP, 72.7% LOB, 4.23 FIP, 3.99 xFIP, 1.3 WAR - Last three starts: 9 runs allowed in 16.1 innings

Advantage: Did you know Yu Darvish has .1 higher RAR and the same WAR as Jered Weaver this season over hopefully the Rangers can derail this notion that Dan Haren is back.

  • Matt Harrison: 12-6, 5.39 K/9, 2.39 BB/9, .289 BABIP, 78.4% LOB, 3.75 FIP, 4.11 xFIP, 2.7 WAR - Last three starts: 9 runs allowed in 22.0 innings
  • C.J. Wilson: 9-7, 7.52 K/9, 3.92 BB/9, .259 BABIP, 74.5% LOB, 3.57 FIP, 4.01 xFIP, 2.6 WAR - Last three starts: 15 runs allowed in 19.1 innings

Advantage: Matt Harrison in Stay Out of the Basement over it's amazing to me how similar C.J. Wilson and Yu Darvish's seasons are going.

Questions to Answer:

  • Which will be higher: The number of runs allowed by Ervin Santana in the game tonight or the number of home runs the Rangers hit in this series?
  • Who is your Return of the McLemore Approved Player to Watch in this series? (I hear Mitch Moreland is back.)
  • Over/Under: 6.5 XBHs hit collectively by Michael Young, Mike Napoli, and Josh Hamilton in this four game series?
  • What's your guess for line (IP/H/K/BB/ER) by Roy Oswalt in his return from back issues tonight?
  • Doesn't that Zack Greinke just look more perfectly hateable than you ever could have imagined in that red Anaheim cap?

The following is a guest post on behalf of Totally Money. Enjoy!?

Finding the Right Type of Credit Card to Suit Your Needs

There are many good reasons (and perhaps, a few bad reasons) why someone would want to have a credit card. From desiring to improve/build your credit history to having a way to pay for everyday items without having to keep large amounts of money in your non-interest bearing checking account, credit cards, if used properly and paid off in full each month, can be a big help to a person's life.

After making the all-important first decision that you indeed want?to get a credit card in the first place, the question then shifts to?what type of card is going to be best for your specific circumstances and life.

Listed below are several of the most popular types of credit cards and some of the deciding factors that can help you determine whether or not that specific type of card would be a good fit. ??

Cash-Back Credit Cards

Cash-back credit cards, as you might imagine, are a very popular choice among credit card consumers because a certain percentage of EVERY purchase you make (regardless of the merchant) gets returned to you in the form of cash-back rewards. In other words, you get cold hard cash back as opposed to only getting a discount on future purchases at specific stores, as with some of the other rewards cards discussed below.

The bottom line here is that cash-back cards are the best for someone that wants to see the rewards return on their purchases as soon as possible.?

Airline, Points, and Gas Rewards Credit Cards

This category that could be summarized as "other rewards" credit cards allows you to accumulate rewards points on all of your purchases (regardless of the merchant). However, you often get added benefits for making purchases from the card issuer. For example, if you have an American Airlines credit card, you get certain perks and additional rewards points for purchases that you make towards flights with that airline. For a review of some popular airline credit cards, click here.?Once you've accumulated a certain number of points, you can then redeem them by getting a discount on a purchase with the card issuer.

The bottom line here is that "other rewards" credit cards are good for someone that shops at one specific merchant VERY FREQUENTLY, or enough to make it worthwhile to be restricted to only redeeming the reward points with one merchant.?

Student Credit Cards

Student credit cards are generally low-balance starter credit cards for younger adults that are looking to get their first credit card that is not co-signed by Mom and Dad. These cards generally are typically somewhat "stripped down" in that they do not carry as good of rewards as other credit cards.

The bottom line here is that student credit cards are great for someone 18-25 years of age who is looking to get their first credit card and doesn't have a lot of credit history built up yet.?

Pre-Paid Credit Cards

The last category of card on the list today is pre-paid credit cards. In fact, these are not credit cards at all, in a strict sense, because you are not being loaned any money. Instead, you send in cash to the credit card company, which is then loaded on the card for you to spend. These cards generally come with higher fees than the other types of cards on this list, since you're paying for an added service from the credit card company.

The bottom line here is that pre-paid cards make sense for someone that has bad credit history and can't yet get a regular credit card, but wants to start gradually restore their credit history.?

How about you all? What type of credit card do you carry? Why did you pick that specific category of card?

Kazakhstan's Maneza wins women's -63kg weightlifting

Maiya Maneza secured Kazakhstan's second gold medal of the London Olympics after patiently biding her time before producing a massive clean and jerk to win the women's under 63kg class on Tuesday.

Maneza, the reigning Asiad champion, recorded a combined total of 245kg, a new Olympic record, in front of a raucous sell-out crowd at the ExCel Arena.

It did not quite match the performance of teammate Zulfiya Chinshanlo, who set a world record in the clean and jerk as she powered to gold in the women's -53kg class on Sunday, but was ample reward for the central Asian country's rise to prominence in women's weightlifting, so often dominated by China.

Maneza -- who was born in Kyrgyzstan and spent her formative years in China before moving to Kazakhstan in 2007 and acquiring Kazakh citizenship -- snatched 110kg to go into the clean and jerk in second spot 2kg behind world champion Svetlana Tsarukaeva of Russia.

"I moved to China when I was little and spent 10 years there," Maneza said in Russian after the event, refusing to speak Mandarin. "But I did not train in China."

Any thoughts of the clean and jerk deciding the eventual winner were put to bed early after Tsarukaeva paid badly for two botched efforts.

The Russian bailed out with a disappointing best of just 125kg for a total of 237kg.

"Second place is definitely not first place," Tsarukaeva said. "But I suffered an injury to my meniscus (knee) that prevented from me going 100 percent all out.

"Just two days I couldn't walk and had to take painkillers to compete today," she added.

Maneza, 26, was home and dry if she nailed her first clean and jerk and the Kazakh did not disappoint, sending a large number of fans wild after she easily hoisted an Olympic record-equalling 135kg at the first time of asking.

Ever the showwoman, Maneza immediately upped the weight to 144kg, but failed to raise the barbell.

"I probably could take 144kg, 135kg was a weak result," Maneza said, adding she took Kazakh nationality because she wanted "to be part of the country".

Canada's Christine Girard went one better than her fourth place in the Beijing Olympics to claim bronze with a total of 236kg (103, 133).

"After Beijing, it made me believe that Canadian women could get a medal," she said.

Heart Gallery helps unite kids with forever families - Area Wide ...

The Oregon County Division of Family and Social Services showcased children in need of families during the statewide Heart Gallery campaign. Professionally taken photos of children, in need of forever families, were put on display at the Glass Sword Cinema and Alton Florist.

Missouri's Heart Gallery project began in 2006. It is a unique way to shine a light on the children in foster care who are waiting for adoption. The portraits and fun descriptions of the children reveal their interests and individuality. The Heart Gallery has helped over 180 children in Missouri find their forever families. There are currently 1,400 children in Missouri that are in foster care, and in need of loving, stable homes.

Oregon County Caseworker, Jessica Campbell, and her supervisor, Denise Young, were on hand to tell The South Missourian News more about the traveling gallery that showcases children in need of adoption.

"This is our traveling Heart Gallery, so we move it from circuit to circuit," said Campbell.

Young added, "It was at the Glass Sword Cinema and then at the Alton Florist. It travels all over the state of Missouri. The kids are from across the state. There are a few that are in our area. These are just kids that are up for adoption and looking for families."

Along with the photos, a basket is placed for people interested in adopting one of the children, to leave their name and number.

"One of our case workers will call and talk to them and set up their license and training," said Young. Classes must be attended by those interested in adoption and those willing to become foster parents.

Young stated, "We are always looking for foster parents in our area. Even with adoption, they have to attend the foster parent training."

Campbell also added more about the requirements for those interested in getting involved, "After the foster parent training, we have specialized adoption classes they must follow up with. The first step is making the call to get on the registry, and we can get them set up." Campbell was able to remember two children in the area that have been adopted as a result of the Heart Gallery.

Sincerely wanting a loving home for the children, Young said, "We have a lot of kids out there that just need homes." "The Heart Gallery also reminds us that it is not just babies that are in need of forever homes, they are all ages," said Campbell.

The Missouri Heart Gallery is a joint effort between the Missouri Department of Social Services and the Adoption Exchange-Missouri Office. The Adoption Exchange was established in 1983 and has been assisting children with special needs be adopted. The Adoption Exchange program has helped more than 5,500 children find devoted families.

Anyone interested in becoming a foster parent or adoption can view and learn more about the Heart Gallery at moheartgallery.org. Campbell encouraged anyone who has questions about helping locally, to call (417) 778-7251 and learn more about adoption or foster parenting.

Website Optimization Companies ? A Potent Marketing Method A ...

Online marketing and search engine optimisation is important for ever web site and online business. As a matter of reality, an online business plus a web site will never ever be able to attract traffic if it isn?t optimized and marketed properly. If these internet websites or online business has no visitors, then that means they?ve no clients and with no customers then it?s going to be hard for them to survive lengthy in the market. That is why it is important for businesses to use the best search engine optimization services to attract many clients over the Net.
?
Why Is It Definitely Necessary?
?
Internet sites and online companies are ranked by several search engines based on their algorithm and these algorithm will think about how valuable the content material with the web site towards the query of their user along with how it could give a better browsing experience. Furthermore, a better rank is going to be favorable towards the business or the website because it could be less complicated for any possible customers to find what they were aiming for in the starting ? something that the business or the web page can offer. If the website could be simply located by search engine users, then a achievable improve in income generation is most likely to take place.
?
How These Types Of Services Function?
?
Basically the process of optimisation operates in two important ways. The first one is completing an overall analysis on the site. SEOs will need to analyse the website?s HTML code, its style in addition to any other problems that could happen to be the reason why the website has a low rank in search engine results. Upon completion of the analysis, the Seo will start the improvement of the website ? improving the appearances, the style, the HTML and every thing else that needs improvement. Web page owners or operators can also select to have added characteristics for their web-site to enhance its rankings ? new capabilities like video streams or having social media optimization.
?
The next method might be how to register the site into the databases of search engines. In order to accomplish this, SEOs will have to use the proper keywords that will be necessary to obtain a prominent position in search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing. SEOs will have to make a proper research regarding the keywords that has to be used in optimizing the website. After the study, SEOs will decide on the best key phrases and integrate it in the website?s content material, title, sub headers, and so on. These keywords have to be also used in the domain of the website and their subsequent pages.
?
Whether or not it really is for online marketing or for developing an online presence, a site will usually be not adequate. These days, it would be strange and bad if corporations will not reap the benefits of the Internet, particularly since the Internet is known as one of the most potent tools in promoting organizations. Though there may be other marketing methods like email marketing, it could be better to invest in Search engine optimization services.

I recommend that you visit this website to learn more concerning this issue: link building service company. In the event you are looking for a blog, follow this: SEO Philippines.

Arizona deputy says risked life for illegal immigrant

PHOENIX (Reuters) - A deputy from a controversial Arizona sheriff's office countered accusations of racial profiling on Thursday, telling a court that he had risked his life to rescue a Latino illegal immigrant from armed kidnappers.

Carlos Rangel told a civil trial alleging Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio that, at the behest of federal immigration police, he went undercover to play the role of the immigrant's relative to meet kidnappers, one of whom pointed a gun at him.

The kidnappers were arrested and the immigrant was released.

Asked by defense lawyer Tom Liddy, Rangel if he was an "anti-Hispanic bigot", Rangel answered: "No. I am not."

Arpaio, who styles himself "America's toughest sheriff," and his office are defendants in a class-action lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Phoenix that will test whether police can target illegal immigrants without racially profiling Hispanic citizens and legal residents.

The 80-year-old lawman testified this week he was against racial profiling and denied his office arrested people because of the color of their skin.

The sheriff, who is seeking re-election to a sixth term in November, has been a lightning rod for controversy over his aggressive enforcement of immigration laws in the state, which borders Mexico, as well as his investigation into the validity of President Barack Obama's birth certificate.

Arizona was in the news last month when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a key element of the state's crackdown on illegal immigrants requiring police to investigate those they stop and suspect of being in the country illegally.

Arpaio faces a separate, broader lawsuit filed by the U.S. Justice Department in May, alleging systematic profiling, sloppy and indifferent police work and a disregard for minority rights.

'RUDE' AND 'MOCKING'

The civil lawsuit was lodged in the name of Manuel Ortega Melendres, one of five Hispanics who say they were stopped by deputies because they were Latino, which Arpaio denies. It was later opened to all Latino drivers stopped since 2007.

Melendres, a Mexican tourist on a valid visa in a truck was pulled over ostensibly because the white driver was speeding.

Rangel, who arrested Melendres, was asked by plaintiffs' counsel if he had questioned the driver. He told the court he had no grounds to investigate the driver.

When asked by Liddy if he had ever racially profiled anyone while working at the sheriff's office, Rangel, a 13-year veteran of the force, replied: "No".

In later testimony, a Hispanic woman who is a U.S. citizen told the court she was pulled over by a sheriff's deputy in 2009 on suspicion she had drugs, alcohol and weapons in her car as she drove home from studying at a Phoenix valley university.

Despite telling the deputy she was pregnant, Lorena Escamilla said, she was thrown roughly onto the back seat of his patrol car. A subsequent search of her car did not find any drugs. While she was cited for failure to produce identification and not having insurance, charges against her were dropped.

Escamilla said she later filed a charge of assault with Phoenix police department against the deputy and has since been fearful of being pulled over by the officer.

Also testifying was a Hispanic mother who was in a vehicle with a group of Boy Scouts that was pulled over in 2009 by a deputy for speeding while returning from the Grand Canyon.

Diona Solis, who is also a U.S. citizen, said the deputy was "rude" and "mocking" and unnecessarily requested identification from the boys in the car aged 8 to 11, among them her son.

"The boys were minors ... I thought it was unreasonable to ask them for IDs ... they hadn't done anything wrong," she said.

Little Birdie Secrets: anger management tips for kids {5 ways to help ...

I know many of you have noticed we have been posting fewer projects and tutorials over the last year. A big part of that has been my family's two cross-country moves in the last 12 months, and the addition of our new baby boy in December. But there has been more to it than that. I struggle with how much of my personal life to share here, but sometimes I think we as women need to do more to reach out and help one another through the challenges of life, especially as moms. I have been working through some serious issues with my children, and I finally realized I needed to set my priorities straight. My children are more important than this blog or any craft project, and I have cut back my time crafting and sitting in front of the computer to be more hands-on with them. I don't want to put my children's personal lives on display, but I feel sharing some of the solutions we've found to help them in their conflicts could bless the lives of other families with similar trials.?

I know I can't be the only one out there who has struggled to help their kids through difficulties like anger management, depression, and adjustment issues, right? Or even just the Terrible Twos (or Sixes or Eights for that matter)! Many children in many different situations struggle with anger management and self-control. And learning to deal with that is a part of life. Our family counselor helped us create "tool boxes" to help the boys learn to control their tempers and deal appropriately with difficult situations. They may not all work for your child, but here are some ideas that might help your child learn to manage their anger, calm down, and avoid a fight.

1. Blow Bubbles

As adults we often try taking deep breaths to help us calm down in intense situations. But each time I would suggest that my son take a few deep breaths to calm down, he would get even angrier. Our counselor suggested blowing bubbles instead. Not only is a fun, happy activity for children, but the act of blowing air through the bubble wand requires them to breathe deeply. Soon they've relaxed and calmed down to a point where they can talk a little more rationally about whatever issue is at hand.?

2. Blow Feathers

Similar to blowing bubbles, a game of "don't let the feather touch the ground" works wonders for a child who is full of steam. Have your child hold a feather above their head and blow it into the air. Keep it in the air only by blowing--no hands! This again helps children engage in deep breathing to calm down, and the fun of the game helps them adjust their attitude.

3. Glitter Bottles

By the time my kids were 5 or 6, timeouts had ceased to be effective. Especially because they viewed it as a punishment rather than just a way to step away from the situation and calm down. Now, instead of a timeout, I hand my son a glitter jar. He knows to shake it up good, then watch the glitter swirl and spin in the water, slowly settling to the bottom. It really has an amazing effect and it's quite soothing. It can take up to 5 minutes for the glitter to settle, and in that time he nearly always becomes calm and more relaxed. (See my easy tutorial here for these Timeout Glitter Bottles!)
4. Target Practice
During one of their therapy sessions, the boys helped make this target on a piece of butcher paper. Each of them wrote something on the target that made them mad or lose their temper. She gave them each several pom poms (puff balls) to use as amunition. We hung the target on the wall in a quiet area of the house, and whenever they started errupting in anger over something, I would direct them to the target. The act of throwing something as hard as they can is a great way to release angry energy, and helps them to release their anger in a way that is not violent or harmful to others.

5. Model Positive Behavior and Walk Away
What do we do when our children cause us to lose our tempers? Our counselor helped me see that my children were often emulating my reaction to difficult situations (like yelling or rolling my eyes). She suggested I model the type of anger management techniques I wanted to see my children use when dealing with feelings of anger. And the best way to do that is often to walk away. Instead of showing my anger and frustration, now I tell my children, "I am feeling really upset right now, so I'm going to go to my room for a minute to calm down and we'll talk a little later." After I've had a good cry or screamed into a pillow, I am usually able to gain control of myself and deal with the situation in a better way. After doing this just a few times, my 6-year-old tried them same thing on me! As we began to argue, he told me he was going to his room to lay down and he'd talk to me later. I couldn't believe it. After all the times I had tried to send him to his room to calm down and being met with an even bigger tantrum, he had decided to do it on his own. Probably because I didn't mention it--he came up with the idea himself!?
This last year has been challenging for our family as we left the only home our kids really knew and moved across the country to a new home, new school, new church congregation, then added a new baby and another cross country move. I was excited for the change of pace, a bigger home and yard, and the chance to meet new people, so I figured my kids would feel the same way. But after a few months we noticed a profound change in our oldest son, including problems at school, angry outbursts, loss of interest in activities he loved, difficulty sleeping, and just general negativity. Our second son started having uncontrollable tantrums that became violent and seemed to go from 0 to 60 in seconds, over the smallest things. After talking to the school counselor, our pediatrician, and a dear friend, I finally made an appointment with a family therapist. It took me a while to do it because I hated the thought that I couldn't figure this out on my own--that I wasn't able to solve the problem just by giving my children more time, love, prayers, and patience. And there is such a stigma associated with therapy in our society, which I think is a shame. (Here's where I get on my soapbox.) I don't believe our Heavenly Father expects us to be able to deal with everything on our own as parents or individuals. I know prayer works, but sometimes you can't just pray away your problems--you've got to act for prayer to work! I've learned it's okay to reach out for help from someone who is trained and experienced in handling things that we may not be equipped to handle ourselves. That's why God made therapists! ;)

Both a friend and our pediatrician suggested a great therapist, so I swallowed my pride and made an appointment. Each week we met with a family counselor who first spoke with me, then met with each of the boys separately to help them address specific issues. She used some play therapy, talked to them about their feelings and behavior, and would often give them homework assignments to work on during the week. And for me it was such a relief to have someone to share my frustration, sadness, and helplessness with, who could not only listen, but actually help me improve the situation and become a better parent. Within just a couple of months, we saw such an improvement in the attitudes and behavior of our children, and I felt a new-found confidence in my parenting that has helped even after the sessions ended. I would strongly encourage anyone who is struggling with similar issues to seek out help from a professional like a family counselor, and don't feel badly about it for one minute! You don't have to do it on your own!

Earnings Preview: US Steel 2Q profit seen lower

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? United States Steel Corp. may provide some insight into the state of the global economy when it reports second-quarter results Tuesday before the market opens.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Analysts expect U.S. Steel to join a string of steel manufacturers that have turned in disappointing results for the second quarter, which historically is the strongest three months of the year for the industry.

Nucor Corp., AK Steel Holding Corp. and ArcelorMittal all reported weaker earnings from April through June, blaming anemic demand.

Economic growth has slowed in the U.S. and China. Some European countries are back in a recession as the region struggles with a massive debt crisis. Manufacturing has slowed on all three continents. Slower growth translates into less demand for steel.

Prices for hot-rolled coil steel have fallen to around $630 per ton since hitting a peak near $800 per ton in March. "It's really difficult to make money at that price," Morningstar Inc. analyst Bridget Freas said.

Steel demand has been weak from the construction industry and agricultural equipment manufacturers and for use in infrastructure projects. There have been areas of improving demand such as automobile manufacturers and the energy industry.

Shares of U.S. Steel dropped nearly 30 percent in the quarter, ending at $20.60 per share on June 29.

WHY IT MATTERS: U.S. Steel, headquartered in Pittsburgh, makes products used in various industries from construction and automobiles to appliances and pipes for the energy industry. The pace of the economic recovery can be gauged in part from the sales that it makes to its broad customer base.

WHAT'S EXPECTED: Analysts, on average, expect net income of 48 cents per share on revenue of $5 billion, according to FactSet.

"In general, the second quarter didn't pan out to be as strong as maybe people would have thought earlier in the year," Freas said. "I don't think we had quite the seasonal pickup that you would expect."

LAST QUARTER: U.S. Steel reported net income of $222 million, or $1.33 a share. Revenue totaled $5.12 billion.

'The Obesity Olympics': Marketing junk food to kids | MinnPost

Somehow I doubt that the athletes competing in the London Olympics trained on a diet that included regular servings of McDonald?s Happy Meals, Coca-Cola soft drinks and Cadbury?s chocolate bars.

But that?s what our children may think as they?re bombarded with ads from these three official Olympic food sponsors over the next two weeks. For, as a public health official told a BBC news reporter earlier this year, research suggests that children perceive junk food to be less unhealthy when it?s associated with sporting events.

And the food manufacturers know this. Cadbury?s (the games? official ?treat? sponsor) has called the Olympics ?the biggest sales opportunity of our lifetime.? That?s not hyperbole. Cadbury?s pre-games Willy-Wonka-like ?Unwrap Gold? promotion was the most successful in the company?s history.

Coca-Cola also had huge pre-game success with its sponsorship of the Olympic torch relay celebration that (literally) ran throughout England for weeks. The company?s logo was constantly visible at these family-oriented events, and Coca-Cola promotional products and samples were handed out to children as well as adults by people in tracksuits along the relay route. (Marketing junk food directly to children is normally banned in Britain.)

McDonald's has celebrated the Olympic spirit by building its largest-ever restaurant (seating capacity: 1,500). The company expects to sell 50,000 Big Macs, 100,000 servings of french fries and 30,000 milkshakes during the 29 days of the Olympics and its companion event, the Paralympics.

?The Obesity Olympics?

Earlier this week, the London-based Children?s Food Campaign (CFC) released a scathing report called ?The Obesity Olympics? that takes the International Olympics Committee (IOC) to task for permitting junk-food manufacturers to continue to sponsor the Games.

?Even before a medal has been won, McDonald?s, Coca-Cola and Cadbury?s are already big winners of the Games,? write the authors of the report. ?Their sponsorship buys them unchallenged prominence and it gives them a particularly valuable association with athleticism and success. They want people either to forget that their flagship brands are high in calories, sugar and fat, or believe instead that consuming such food and drink is part of a healthy, and ?winning? formula. The increased emphasis these companies place on ?obesity-offsetting? ? funding sports equipment and exercise schemes ? is also part of their drive to convince us that they are trying to be a positive force for the nation?s health.?

You?d have to do a lot of ?offsetting? to counter the calories in the flagship junk-food products sold by McDonald?s, Coca-Cola and Cadbury, the report points out. To burn off the calories in a meal that includes a Big Mac and a medium-sized Coca-Cola, you?d need to bicycle for 110 minutes, for example. And to undo the calories in a Cadbury?s Dairy Milk chocolate bar, you?d need to swim laps for 30 minutes.

?The Olympics have become a celebration of 'big,'? a CFC official told the Guardian. ?For the junk food companies who sponsor the Games, that means big restaurants, big audiences, big brand value, big profits. But for children that could also mean bigger waistlines and bigger health problems later in life."

A cynical strategy

IOC president Jacques Rogge acknowledged this summer that there might be a ?question mark? over the suitability of having fast-food manufacturers sponsor the Olympics. But that didn?t keep the IOC from letting McDonald?s and Coca-Cola sign up for another two rounds of the Games.

?What we now see coming to fruition in London2012,? write the authors of the CFC report, ?is a cynical money-before-health strategy that values pounds in the pocket, but ignores the pounds of fat in our already obese society, contradicts medical advice and undermines parents? best efforts to encourage their children to eat healthily.

?Members of the International Olympic Committee must hold up their hands and recognise that they bear some responsibility,? the report adds. ?Ultimately though, it is up to all of us ? whether spectators, armchair fans or Olympic refuseniks ? to make a stand against the double standards which see companies making fat profits out of a sporting event at the expense of the health of our children and young people. If we do so, London2012 could yet have a more positive legacy: as the start of a successful movement to change the way the Games, and other major sporting events, select their sponsors and expect them to behave.?

Don?t hold your breath.

Countering the message

Parents will need to make an extra effort this Olympics to point out to their children that athletes don?t become top competitors by eating nutrient-poor and calorie-laden burgers, soft drinks and chocolate bars, no matter what the TV ads suggest. In fact, not eating such foods is what makes them more competitive.

Take the example of Ryan Lochte, the 27-year-old American swimmer who is likely to win several medals in London. He overhauled his diet after not performing as well as he hoped in the 2008 Olympics.?

Before, his typical breakfast was often ?two or three McDonald?s egg McMuffins, some hashbrowns and maybe a chicken sandwich,? he told People magazine?s Kristen Mascia. And he?d down a whole bag of chips before each practice. Now, however, Lochte starts his day with scrambled eggs, fruit and oatmeal, and eats salads or healthy wraps for lunch and dinner. His new diet has made him much fitter, he told Mascia.

That?s a great message for our children ? and one no Olympics sponsor will be promoting.

Reddit as a Science Outreach Tool | The Yale Forum on Climate ...

Tony Barnston, a climate scientist at Columbia University?s International Research Institute for Climate and Society, engages with the broad public through Reddit, a social news site. ?I would like to do another,? he says.

What do astrophyscist Neil Degrasse Tyson, Congressman Daryl Issa (R-Calif.), and fomer Man Vs. Wild host Bear Grylls have in common?

They?ve all let strangers ask them anything on Reddit, a social news website. Climate scientist Tony Barnston of Columbia University?s International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) also recently tested the ?Ask Me Anything? waters and found them to his liking.

The experience turned out to be enlightening not only for the Reddit community, but also for Barnston, who discovered a new opportunity to talk shop about climate in an informal setting. His experience may provide lessons for other climate scientists looking to engage the public about their work.

What exactly is Reddit?

Reddit has been referred to as ?an Internet firehose? because of the massive amount of information that regularly moves through the site. Users generate all of that information, as they do on Facebook and Twitter, but there are some big differences. For one, most users are anonymous. For another, rather than following specific users ? though they can do that ? most users manage that firehose of information through ?subreddits,? in effect communities where users post on specific topics.

Nearly 1.5 million users post on Reddit daily in one of some 144,000 subreddits. Of those 144,000 subreddits, one of the most active is ?IAmA.? That?s where users with interesting stories can share their insights and also participate in an ?Ask Me Anything? or AMA. An AMA is basically what it sounds like: users pose questions, usually germane to the original poster?s background, and the original poster answers them.

To further turn the firehose of information into a manageable stream, users can up-vote or down-vote questions. As a result, for users sorting the queue of questions by popularity, the cream generally rises to the top and the most off-topic questions end up at the bottom.

Testing Crowd-Sourcing in the Reddit Waters

Having a climate scientist participate in an AMA came at the initiative of Arif Noori, the assistant Web director at Columbia University?s Earth Institute, which houses IRI.

?It was because of the community, the simplicity, and the instantaneous nature of these threads on Reddit that we decided to try it out,? Noori explained in an e-mail. ?There?s something interesting about the crowd-sourced nature of voting certain questions to the top. You don?t have that on Twitter or Facebook.?

Noori also cited as another reason that a Reddit climate science AMA made sense: the ?sizeable community of Redditors interested in science topics.? In fact, the science subreddit is the sixth most-subscribed subreddit?on the entire site, still?another reason that a climate science AMA made sense.

A few days prior to the session, Noori reached out to IAmA moderators to help promote Barnston?s AMA. ?I was afraid we wouldn?t get any traction since there were two other AMAs happening that day ? A journalist who just returned from an Al-Qaeda stronghold in Yemen and an actor who played Shaggy in Scooby-Doo,? Noori said.

Despite competing with current events and pop culture, Barnston?s Reddit still had a great turnout. There were more than 200 comments and questions posted to his AMA. ?I couldn?t answer them all. There were too many,? Barnston said later in an interview in his office.

Barnston took cues from Reddit users in deciding which questions to answer first. ?I focused more on the top ones that had more points, that were more popular,? he said.

At the same time, he also wanted to play to his strengths in modeling and data. ?I did read the ones on the bottom half, and a few of them were so up my alley that I wanted to answer them. Things about data were unpopular, but that was a topic I could relate to.?

By answering both the popular questions and ones more in tune with his own interests, Barnston was able to keep users following along and himself interested and involved.

Why It Worked ? Time to Organize Your Thoughts, Your Response

Aside from the benefits Noori had anticipated, Barnston saw one other major benefit of doing a Reddit AMA that could appeal to scientists perhaps feeling some anxiety about engaging with the public. ?I liked having time to think of my answer. Look at my office, that?s what my mind looks like,? Barnston quipped.

His office is actually representative of lots of scientists? minds. The shelves are filled with statistical analyses and earth science books, printouts of academic journal articles are scattered on the desk, and climate model outputs, sea surface temperature maps, and manilla folders are piled ? albeit quite neatly ? on the floor. In short, there?s a wealth of information, but it can take awhile to remember where it is stashed.

And while he didn?t have to dig too deep to answer some questions such as one about differences between La Ni?a and El Ni?o, others were more complex. In an interview on the Earth Institute?s ?State of the Planet? blog, Barnston noted some questions ?could easily have been asked by a colleague.? For example, one questioner asked about the interaction between El Ni?o, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and the Atlantic Meridional Oscillation.

Perhaps not surprisingly, one of the hottest topics of the AMA was climate change. That?s where Barnston balked a bit. Of all the topics, climate change sparked the most discussion and debate among Reddit users themselves. While the exchanges remained civil for the most part, Barnston worried that his answers could get misconstrued as policy statements or could be taken out of context.

He had to be cautious about where to draw the line, for example, when answering a question about what short-term effect of climate change people should be most worried about. Barnston cited sea-level rise impacts on coastal communities as the largest short-term threat. He also pointed to the propensity of communities to continue building on low-lying land as a cause for concern. However, he managed to stop himself short of offering a climate change policy solution and shied-away from development issues because neither subject falls within his area of expertise.

Barnston worried also about what headlines could look like on climate ?skeptic? websites. Given that his affiliation with Columbia was presented up front and used to lend credibility to his responses, he realized his answers could also reflect on the university and on the climate research going on there. In other words, his words, no matter how well-intended and carefully stated, might somehow be used to disparage his credibility and that of the university. (In this respect, the long-lasting ripple effects from the stolen climate scientist e-mails at the University of East Anglia in 2009 are never far from one?s mind.)

What?s Next? ?More Scientists on Reddit?

?Overall, I enjoyed doing it and would like to do another,? Barnston said, reflecting on the experience.

Noori says he hopes to see more scientists on Reddit, too and thinks tying an AMA to a climate or earth science current event could be key: ?I think it?s a good idea if scientists would make themselves available for when there is something newsworthy going on ? for example, a seismologist AMA after an earthquake.?

With the Climate Prediction Center recently issuing an El Ni?o Watch, August or September might be an ideal time for Barnston to head back to the IAmA subreddit. By then, climatologists should have a clearer idea of whether an El Ni?o will develop and what its strength might be. That and other coming events no doubt will continue to provide an ?in? for Reddit users to engage even more with climate science.

So You Want to Reddit ?

?I would encourage other scientists to give it a try,? Barnston said regarding a Reddit AMA. If you?re ready to take the AMA plunge, here are a few guidelines to get you started.

Some Things to Do

1.??DO provide proof of your qualifications. You can be anyone on Reddit, which is great if you want to be an anonymous commenter. But if you want to do an AMA, be ready to provide proof. That means a tweet or a press release saying you?ll be on Reddit or verifying your identity with the moderators prior to the AMA.

2.??DO be unique. IAmA moderators promote AMAs with different angles. If you want them to promote your AMA, show what?s special about your line of research whether it be the topic, the places you travel to, or new findings that move the field forward.

3.??DO make sure you have time. With over 200 questions to choose from, responding to even the best can be time-consuming. Barnston spent the better part of a workday answering questions. Be prepared to make a commitment.

And Some Things to Avoid

1.??DON?T feel the need to answer everyone. While most questions were thoughtful during Barnston?s AMA, some were frivolous. Don?t feel the need to answer ones that are off-topic or seem out of bounds.

2.??DON?T be nervous. Most Redditors are anonymous, but that doesn?t mean they?re hostile. Reading through Barnston?s Reddit, many users said thanks when they asked their question, and 99 percent of the discourse was extremely civil. As Barnston noted, some users could even be colleagues!

3.??DON?T be afraid to move on. If a commenter keeps asking off-topic or hostile questions, just skip over them. There were so many serious questions during Barnston?s AMA, he couldn?t get through all of them. Don?t waste your time with dead-end questions.

Despite Misconceptions, Cosmetic Surgery Provides Great Benefits ...

Health and Fitness | General health | * Written by Ace Abbey | Wednesday, 25 July 2012 05:35 | Word Count: 504

The cosmetic surgery industry has gotten a bad reputation lately. This is mainly due to the things people see on television and read in magazines and other publications. Many times, this industry is portrayed in a negative way. For instance, some may present this type of procedure as a way for people to try to live up to the unrealistic standards set my models and other celebrities.

Some people are so against cosmetic surgery that they can see absolutely nothing good about it. In fact, they oppose it every chance they get. They write articles and blog posts speaking out against this procedure. There may even be groups whose sole purpose is to ensure that this type of procedure is outlawed, especially for children and teenagers. Although their intentions may be good and at least a few of their complaints bear some validity, they are ignoring a number of key factors. These procedures are not all bad.

Of course, some people take it to the extreme, but that can happen with just about anything. Contrary to what some may believe, however, cosmetic surgery has provided and continues to provide a number of great benefits.

Just think about it. There are people who are born with deformities every day. This can be especially hard to deal with if it is a facial issue, because the world can be a very cruel place. There are people who won't hesitate to stare at or make nasty comments about someone with a deformity. The harshness is usually multiplied when dealing with children.

Many children, especially at the elementary age, aren't aware of when it's okay to speak or what they should or should not say. So, if they see another child with a facial issue, they may point and look out of curiosity. However, it can be perceived by the other child as teasing. Then, there are cases where teasing may actually be the goal. Those who work in the field of cosmetic surgery are able to help fix the problematic physical issues and alleviate these types of circumstances.

This industry is also responsible for helping those who have been injured in sports activities or car accidents. This can take a huge toll on people. It may be even harder for them to deal with, because they have lived much of their lives without any type of deformities. So, to have to live with this new reality is difficult to handle.

Cosmetic surgery is not all bad. Although people have abused it and made it into something undesirable in some cases, there are a lot of reasons why this field should not be shunned. There are people who are now able to go through life without having to deal with deformities, all because there was a surgeon who had the ability to help them.

Hacking experts find new ways to attack Android phones

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Hacking experts have demonstrated ways to attack Android smartphones using methods they said work on virtually all such devices in use today, despite recent efforts by search engine giant Google to boost protection.

Experts showed off their prowess at the Black Hat hacking conference in Las Vegas, where some 6,500 corporate and government security technology workers gathered to learn about emerging threats to their networks.

"Google is making progress, but the authors of malicious software are moving forward," said Sean Schulte of Trustwave's SpiderLabs.

Google spokeswoman Gina Scigliano declined to comment on the security concerns or the new research.

Accuvant researcher Charlie Miller demonstrated a method for delivering malicious code to Android phones using a new Android feature known as near field communications.

"I can take over your phone," Miller said.

Near field communications allow users to share photos with friends, make payments or exchange other data by bringing Android phones within a few centimeters of similarly equipped devices such as another phone or a payment terminal.

Miller said he figured out how to create a device the size of a postage stamp that could be stuck in an inconspicuous place such as near a cash register at a restaurant. When an Android user walks by, the phone would get infected, said Miller.

He spent five years as a global network exploit analyst at the U.S. National Security Agency, where his tasks included breaking into foreign computer systems.

"WILD WEST"

Miller and another hacking expert, Georg Wicherski of CrowdStrike, have also infected an Android phone with a piece of malicious code that Wicherski unveiled in February.

That piece of software exploits a security flaw in the Android browser that was publicly disclosed by Google's Chrome browser development team, according to Wicherski.

Google has fixed the flaw in Chrome, which is frequently updated, so that most users are now protected, he said.

But Wicherski said Android users are still vulnerable because carriers and device manufacturers have not pushed those fixes or patches out to users.

Marc Maiffret, chief technology officer of the security firm BeyondTrust, said: "Google has added some great security features, but nobody has them."

Experts say iPhones and iPads don't face the same problem because Apple has been able to get carriers to push out security updates fairly quickly after they are released.

Two Trustwave researchers told attendees about a technique they discovered for evading Google's "Bouncer" technology for identifying malicious programs in its Google Play Store.

They created a text-message blocking application that uses a legitimate programming tool known as java script bridge. Java script bridge lets developers remotely add new features to a program without using the normal Android update process.

Companies including Facebook and LinkedIn use java script bridge for legitimate purposes, according to Trustwave, but it could also be exploited maliciously.

To prove their point, they loaded malicious code onto one of their phones and remotely gained control of the browser. Once they did that, they could force it to download more code and grant them total control.

"Hopefully Google can solve the problem quickly," said Nicholas Percoco, senior vice president of Trustwave's SpiderLabs. "For now, Android is the Wild West."

Business Travel Doesn't Need To Be A Pain With These Tips ...

When traveling through a busy airport with children, dress them in bright colored clothing. A bright color will be easier to recognize, should you become separated. It will also be easy to remember (and tell airport security) what your child is wearing if they are dressed in brighter, more unusual colors.

If you are leaving the country, make a copy of your passport to take with you. If you happen to misplace your original passport, it will make getting a new one a much simpler process. The two minutes that it will take for you to make the copy will likely save you hours when getting it replaced during your travels.

When travelling in different countries, instead of exchanging cash for the local currency, use an ATM to withdrawal some pocket money. Most of the time banks and the like get much better exchange rates than you as an individual can get. This can end up saving you a good bit of money in the long run.

Scan your passport and email a copy to yourself. It rarely happens, but in the chance that you lose your passport during your travels, this will be a lifesaver. Getting a replacement passport can be a headache and having a copy can make the process much faster and less traumatic.

Make sure you pick a favorable season to enjoy your travels, when possible. You don?t want to travel to somewhere and be stuck in the hotel during your entire stay because of unfavorable weather conditions. If you are unsure when it is best to travel to a given location. ask a friend or look it up online.

Purchase a travel dress, which is a garment that can be worn multiple ways. It can be worn as a dress, skirt, shirt and wrap. You can then pack a few other accessories and accompanying items, which will save lots of space in your suitcase for all the souvenirs you wish to bring home.

Listen to audio books while taking a long car trip. Listening to books will help give you have a change of pace while traveling. The audio books will give you something to do, and help keep the boredom away. You can often check out audio books at your local library.

If you?re looking to traveling to a foreign country, try not to exchange your currency at the airport. Because it is often the easiest currency exchange to get to, the exchange rates are typically very high. Before you travel, look up nearby banks that do currency exchanges, as you will typically be able to find much better rates.

With the information that was presented in this article, it is quite plain to see that traveling does not have to be a huge hassle. All you have to do is put these techniques to use and you can actually travel stress free. So do not toss and turn, instead just get yourself ready to go.

Evidence-based Home Visitation Program to Increase School ...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 24, 2012

Expansion of United Way?s Parent-Child Home Program will serve up to 119 families in 2012-2013.

On July 24, the Board of Directors at United Way of Dane County approved the expansion of its Parent-Child Home Program. In an investment partnership with CUNA Mutual Foundation, an additional $56,735 will be devoted to this Program whose key goal is to ensure children enter kindergarten with the necessary skills to succeed. This is an important strategy of our community?s Agenda for Change goals of preparing children for success in school and closing the racial achievement gap. United Way?s Parent-Child Home Program served 43 families in 2011/2012; a planned expansion would have allowed up to 90 families to be reached in 2013. Now, with CUNA Mutual Foundation?s support United Way will be able to serve up to 119 families in 2012-2013.

?41% of Madison children entering kindergarten do not have the skills necessary to be successful in school,? says Leslie Ann Howard, President & CEO of United Way of Dane County. ?Children who start school behind their peers have difficulty catching up. Parent-Child Home Program is an integral element in ensuring that children enter school prepared, ready to learn, and ultimately graduate from high school. With CUNA Mutual Foundation?s partnership we are able to reach even more families in the coming year. It is community collaboration, like this, that makes real change happen in all aspects of our community?s Agenda for Change.?

The Parent-Child Home Program is an evidence-based strategy that focuses on the parent and child interaction, reaching developmental milestones, and language growth. The program targets low income families with children two years of age. A home visitor visits a family twice a week for two years. Each week the child receives a new, developmentally appropriate book or toy to keep. The home visitor shows the parent how to interact with their child using that book or toy. The second visit of the week reinforces the use of the book or toy and ensures its being used.

In May, the United Way Board of Directors and Madison Metropolitan School District Board of Education (MMSD) met to recommit to a set of comprehensive strategies focused on closing the racial achievement gap, early education was identified as the highest priority of the defined strategies. Additional strategies include: keeping students engaged through academic support, early identification and treatment of behavioral health issues, providing parent support with parent engagement sessions, and mobilizing skilled tutors to work one-on-one in concert with the classroom teacher through United Way?s Schools of Hope programs.

Longitudinal research over 50 years shows Parent-Child Home program participants have significantly higher graduation rates than their peers who were not in the program. They graduated at the same rate as children from middle class families. An independent study, conducted by the City of New York Office of the Comptroller, calculates savings from the reduced need for special education services for Parent-Child Home Program graduates at $210,000 per child.

ABOUT UNITED WAY?S EARLY CHILDHOOD WORK
United Way?s Born Learning initiative started in 2007, when a group of community leaders convened to review the school readiness of children entering kindergarten in Dane County. This group first looked at the data they found that 41% of our young children were entering kindergarten without the skills they needed to succeed in school. The group also examined how poverty plays a critical role in early childhood development. After nine months of reviewing research and data, and talking with community experts, United Way?s Born Learning Delegation released their Mobilization Plan and committed to increasing the number of children who are fully prepared for kindergarten from 59% to 75% by 2013. Four strategies were selected to pursue to meet that goal:

  • All children are screened for developmental delays through medical providers, professionals or community-based programs.
  • All children have access to high quality early childhood experiences that encourage positive development.
  • All caregivers have access to resources that help them become successful as their children?s first teachers.
  • The Dane County community is aware of the link between high quality early childhood experience and school readiness.

Our Community?s Agenda for Change
