Indicted NFL player's cousin arrested in SA

Cocaine Drug Bust Crime
SAN ANTONIO -

A San Antonio man was arrested this week after federal officials said he planned to sell cocaine and marijuana. The suspect's cousin is former NFL player Sam Hurd, who was indicted on conspiracy to distribute cocaine charges.

The Department of Justice said Jesse Tyrone Chavful, 46, met with an informant in October 2011 at his office on New Braunfels Avenue. Chavful and the informant had made drug deals in the late 90s, but hadn't spoken in several years, according to federal officials.

The informant said Chavful showed them a picture of Hurd, one of his jerseys and said his "little cousin Sam" played professional football. He then tried to buy 10 to 15 kilograms of cocaine and marijuana for his "little cousin."

Late last month, informants met with Chavful who said he wanted to buy 5 kilograms of cocaine and 200 pounds of marijuana because he "needed to make about $200,000," the DOJ said. About two weeks later, undercover agents arrived at Chavful's office with the drugs and once they were delivered, uniformed officers showed up and arrested Chavful.

According to court documents, in December 2011, an informant and Chavful's cousin, former NFL player Sam Hurd, discussed establishing a "long-term business relationship" to buy and sell drugs in the Chicago area. At the time, Hurd was playing for the Chicago Bears.

On December 14, Hurd met with an undercover officer at a Chicago restaurant where he negotiated a deal to buy 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week, the Department of Justice said. Hurd was arrested by federal officials after taking possession of one kilogram of cocaine.

Chavful made his initial appearance in federal court in San Antonio Thursday. He will be detained pending further court action. Hurd will go to trial on August 6.
