UK: Queen hospitalized over stomach illness

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's Queen Elizabeth II was hospitalized Sunday over an apparent stomach infection that has ailed her for days, a rare instance of ill health sidelining the long-reigning monarch. Elizabeth will have to cancel a visit to Rome and other engagements as she recovers, and outside experts said she may have to be rehydrated intravenously.

Buckingham Palace said the 86-year-old queen had experienced symptoms of gastroenteritis and was being examined at London's King Edward VII Hospital ? the first time in a decade that Elizabeth has been hospitalized.

"As a precaution, all official engagements for this week will regrettably be either postponed or cancelled," the palace said in a statement. Elizabeth's two-day trip to Rome had been planned to start Wednesday. A spokeswoman said the trip may be "reinstated" at a later date.

The symptoms of gastroenteritis ? vomiting and diarrhea ? usually pass after one or two days, although they can be more severe in older or otherwise vulnerable people. Dehydration is a common complication.

The illness was first announced Friday, and Elizabeth had to cancel a visit Swansea, Wales, on Saturday to present leeks ? a national symbol ? to soldiers of the Royal Welsh Regiment in honor of Wales' national day, St. David's Day. She instead spent the day trying to recover at Windsor Castle, but appears to have had trouble kicking the bug.

A doctor not involved in the queen's treatment said that if medical officials determined that she is losing too much fluid, she would be rehydrated intravenously.

"Not everyone can keep up with oral hydration so it is pretty routine to go to hospital and have a drip and wait for the thing to pass and keep yourself hydrated," said Dr. Christopher Hawkey of the University of Nottingham's faculty of medicine and health sciences.

Britain's National Health Service says that the two most common causes of gastroenteritis in adults are food poisoning and the norovirus, a common winter vomiting bug which typically afflicts between 600,000 and 1 million Britons each year. British health guidelines advise that people with the norovirus avoid work for at least two days.

"It's very infectious and strikes in winter because people are indoors and it spreads more easily," Hawkey said.

Elizabeth has ruled since 1952 and is Britain's second-longest serving monarch, beaten only by Queen Victoria in terms of the number of years spent on the throne.

Elizabeth's husband Prince Philip, 91, has had several hospital stays, but Elizabeth has rarely let sickness get in the way of her still-busy schedule.

About five months ago, she cancelled an engagement due to a bad back. The spokeswoman, who demanded anonymity because palace rules do not let her go on the record, said the last time Elizabeth was hospitalized was in 2003.

The queen has undertaken a number of engagements over the past week. On Tuesday, she met the new archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, at Buckingham Palace, and on Thursday she presented a host of British Olympians, including track and field star Jessica Ennis, with honors during an investiture ceremony.

Ingrid Seward, the editor of the Britain's Majesty Magazine, said that the queen "probably agreed to be hospitalized in order to get better quickly."

"Everybody will want to be wishing her a speedy recovery," she told Sky News television.

That includes British Prime Minister David Cameron, whose office said he passed on his best wishes to the queen.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) ? Joe Harris had just scored a career-high 36 points, essentially half of his team's total in a 73-68 victory against No. 3 Duke, and the junior guard was talking about "a team effort" and how the Cavaliers played "sound defense."

Joe, was that the best performance of your basketball career?

"I guess you could say that," he finally allowed.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski wasn't quite as reluctant to heap on the praise.

"Harris was fantastic, which we knew he would be. He's just one of the best players in the country," Krzyzewski said. "When you have a guy playing at that level ... it brings everybody up. You know you're playing with a stud."

Harris and Akil Mitchell, who had 19 points and 12 rebounds, combined for 55 of the Cavaliers' points as they celebrated the 11-year anniversary of their last victory over a top 5 team by doing it again on Thursday night.

When Virginia's 16th consecutive home victory was finished, fans stormed the court.

"It's just great," senior point guard Jontel Evans said. "They're the reason we go so hard when we're here. We feed off their energy. They've been great. They've just been unbelievable this year. I've never seen support like this."

Virginia (20-8, 10-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat No. 3 Duke 87-84 11 years ago, their last top 5 victory.

This time, Duke never led.

"That's unbelievable right there, that they never led in the game," Evans said.

Curry led Duke with 28 points, all but five coming after halftime, and Quinn Cook had 22, but the Blue Devils (24-4, 11-4) failed to slow down either Harris or Mitchell, whose dominating play kept a sellout crowd giddy all night.

Plumlee finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and three turnovers and several times looked up to see Mitchell dunking over him.

Virginia outrebounded Duke 36-26, and held the Blue Devils to 39.6 percent shooting (21 of 53).

"It was a very, very physical game and we're not equipped to that type of game. We got knocked back," Krzyzewski said.

In the second half, Harris and Mitchell scored Virginia's first 16 points as the Cavaliers built a 64-50 lead with 3:23 left before closing the victory at the free throw line.

Virginia led 28-23 at halftime. Curry hit a 3-pointer to start the second half but Mitchell respondetidzu snt hid HSD TI FIGd with a 15-footer, Harris missed a 3-pointer over Plumlee, but went around him for the rebound and laid it in. As the Blue Devils were missing six consecutive shots, Mitchell hit two free throws, and when Rasheed Sulaimon fouled Harris in the act of shooting, he drew a technical foul for arguing. Harris made all four shots, finishing off a 10-0 burst that made it 38-26.

When Virginia added a 7-2 burst a short time later, the lead was 49-35 with 8:15 left Jnd John Paul Jones Arena was roaring.

The Blue Devils, who may have been looking ahead to a matchup with No. 5 Miami on Saturday, never got closer than nine points until the final minute, when Virginia made 3 of 4 free throws to hold on.

The victory was huge for the Cavaliers, who were in need of a marquee victory to enhance their NCAA tournament credentials. They got it with a fast start and a stifling defensive effort. And the Cavaliers did it despite making only three 3-pointers, more than four below their average, by pounding the ball inside. Virginia scored 34 points inside, Duke just 22.

With its first sellout since North Carolina visited last season, the Cavaliers quickly brought the crowd into the game by scoring the first nine points on their way to a 15-4 lead after 6 1/2 minutes.

The lead got to 18-6 on a three-point play by Harris before Duke settled down offensively.

Curry hit two free throws for his first points midway through the half, sparking a 15-4 burst for the Blue Devils that got them within 22-21 with 4:26 to play. Curry finished it with a 3-pointer, hit only field goal of the half. Duke's only points the rest of the half came on Plumlee's lone field goal of the half.

Jontel Evans steal and layup gave Virginia a 24-21 lead, and was Virginia's first field goal scored by anyone but Harris in more than 11 minutes. Baskets by Harris and Mitchell made it 28-23 at the half.

Strange sight on college basketball court: sleeves

(AP) ? College basketball's tournament time is taking on a new look this year, with lots of double-takes expected.

Six teams will wear special uniforms for their conference and anticipated NCAA tournament appearances next month, setting a fashion trend in college basketball: camouflage-patterned shorts, bright-colored jerseys and sleeves.

Sleeves?

Yep. Sleeves on jerseys, including those worn by tradition-rich UCLA, giving March's rich history a decidedly unconventional look. Six teams will wear special tournament uniforms unveiled on Thursday by Adidas ? UCLA, Louisville, Baylor, Kansas, Notre Dame and Cincinnati.

"I'm sure the traditionalists out there are really, really struggling looking at those uniforms," Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin said on Thursday.

Especially those worn by UCLA, Louisville and Baylor, which agreed to have short sleeves on their jerseys. Adidas debuted a short-sleeve basketball shirt with the NBA's Golden State Warriors in mid-February.

The new look will be especially head-turning for teams that usually wear tradition on their chests.

"Everyone here knows Kansas' tradition and history should be what is promoted in our look, and we have done that for years," coach Bill Self said. "But this is the one game or whatever that we will make that exception for Adidas.

"I probably don't think as much of them as I do the normal ones we wear, but for a game or two I don't think it's that big of a deal in the Big 12 tournament."

Alternate uniforms have become big business in college sports, from Oregon's fluorescent tones with Nike to Maryland's loud designs with Under Armour. Adidas introduced special light-weight basketball uniforms for Cincinnati, Louisville and Baylor at tournament time last season.

Baylor and Louisville got the most attention with their bright colors. Cincinnati's were more subdued, with neon trim. Bearcats players quickly took a liking to them ? Cincinnati reached the Big East tournament title game before losing to Louisville, then made the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament while wearing them.

"It's like it refreshes you as a team," point guard Cashmere Wright said before practice on Thursday. "You go out there and it's a whole other uniform. You can take any identity you want to take. Last year, we got an identity and we just played it out."

No. 6 Kansas, No. 10 Louisville and No. 21 Notre Dame are currently ranked in the AP Top 25. UCLA, Cincinnati and Baylor are expecting to join them in the NCAA tournament wearing their new gear.

The second-ranked Notre Dame women and No. 16 Louisville will also wear the gear.

Players like the light-weight uniforms and love the flashy look. They also like the way they stand out from the rest of the tournament crowd.

"It's an interesting phenomenon, the whole uniform-shoe thing with young people, having something that nobody else has," Cronin said.

Adidas checked with the schools to see if they were interested in the tournament designs. Not everyone liked the sleeves ? Cronin turned down the idea for his Bearcats.

"I'm happy they don't have sleeves," Wright said.

The sleeves seem to be the biggest attention-getter, a reminder of the sport's fledgling days. Xavier coach Chris Mack wore sleeved jerseys when he played at Evansville in the late 1980s, getting over his disdain for the look.

"Aesthetically, I thought they were really ugly," Mack said on Thursday. "But it's just ironic because so many guys wore T-shirts ? I think it started with Patrick Ewing and Chris Mullin wearing T-shirts under their uniforms, which is comfortable for some guys. But I thought the one-uniform-T-shirt look was a little outdated and strange."

Outdated? Not anymore.

New study finds magazine advertisements may help promote troubling behavior in young men

Does advertising influence society, or is it merely a reflection of society's pre-existing norms? Where male attitudes are concerned, a new study implicates magazine advertisements specifically aimed at men as helping to reinforce a certain set of views on masculinity termed "hyper-masculinity." The article by Megan Vokey, a Ph.D. candidate from the University of Manitoba, and colleagues is published in Springer's journal Sex Roles.

Hyper-masculinity is an extreme form of masculine gender ideology comprised of four main components: toughness, violence, dangerousness and calloused attitudes toward women and sex. The authors found that hyper-masculine depictions of men, centered on this cluster of beliefs, appear to be common place in U.S. magazine advertisements.

Using a range of eight, high-circulation magazines marketed to men of different ages, levels of education and income (e.g. Golf Digest to Game Informer), Vokey and her colleagues analyzed the ads in each magazine where a photograph, picture or symbol of a man was shown. The researchers then categorized these advertisements using the four components that constitute hyper-masculinity. They found that at least one of these hyper-masculine attitudes was depicted in 56 percent of the total sample of 527 advertisements. In some magazines, this percentage was as high as 90 percent.

Vokey's results are consistent with considerable prior research showing a positive association between hyper-masculine beliefs and a host of social and health problems, such as dangerous driving, drug use and violence towards women. Further analysis of the data showed that magazines with the highest proportion of hyper-masculine advertisements were those aimed at younger, less-affluent and less-educated men. The authors argue that this is an area of real concern as young men are still learning appropriate gender behaviors, and their beliefs and attitudes can be subtly shaped by images that the mass media repeatedly represent. In addition, men with lower social and economic power are already more likely to use a facade of toughness and physical violence as methods of gaining power and respect. These advertisements are thought to help reinforce the belief that this is desirable behavior.

The authors conclude, "The widespread depiction of hyper-masculinity in men's magazine advertising may be detrimental to both men and society at large. Although theoretically, men as a group can resist the harmful aspects of hyper-masculine images, the effects of such images cannot be escaped completely." They add that educating advertisers about the potential negative consequences of their advertising may help reduce the use of these stereotypes.
